After being SFU's leading scorer for two straight nights, and helping clinch the Clan's first home playoff series in over five seasons, Matt Kuzminski is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week. Kuzminski scored 16 points and 21 points in two wins for the Clan against Thompson Rivers, as the Clan clinched second spot in the Pacific Division.
February 1, 2010 - DMR Relay Team - Track and Field
On Friday night, the Distance Medley Relay team of Helen Crofts, Jessica Smith, Angela Shaw and Michaela Kane broke the five-year old DMR record, previously held by SFU. The four SFU runners posted a time 15 seconds better than the old mark, as they begin preparation for the 2010 NAIA Indoor National Championships, held the first weekend in March.
January 25, 2010 - Robyn Buna - Women's Basketball

On Friday night, Robyn Buna (Kelowna, B.C.) pushed her ridiculous three-point shooting to a new level, hitting 7-of-10 three-pointers, while scoring 24 points in the Clan's record 50th win in a row. Buna is currently averaging over 13.0 points per game on the season, and is one of eight seniors on the women's team who will be in action this Saturday night against UBC at 5 pm.
January 18, 2010 - Matt Kuzminski - Men's Basketball

Playing in their biggest weekend series to date, the Simon Fraser University Clan men’s basketball team turned to fifth-year senior Matt Kuzminski for an offensive answer against Lower Mainland rivals the Trinity Western University Spartans, and the Nanaimo native delivered. The leading scorer in back-to-back wins over TWU, Kuzminski notched 20 and 21 points in 80-69 and 68-64 wins over the Spartans, including five during overtime in Saturday’s victory, gave the Clan a strangle hold over second place in the Pacific Division.
Kuzminski also hit 13-of-16 free throws over the weekend, and brought his scoring average up to 14.4 points per game. The upstart Clan are now 9-2 on the season, and host Winnipeg and Manitoba next weekend.
January 11, 2010 - Laurelle Weigl - Women's Basketball

Facing the daunting task of playing the No. 8 and No. 5 ranked teams in the country on the road, the Simon Fraser University Clan women's basketball team, led by Laurelle Weigl responded, defeated both No. 8 Alberta and No. 5 Saskatchewan to extend their school record winning streak to 48 games. SFU now stands alone atop the Canada West standings, and host Trinity Western this weekend.
November 9, 2009 - Kevin Friesen - Cross Country
The Simon Fraser University Clan men's cross country team put together an outstanding performance this past weekend at the Association of Independent Institutions Championship, and the principle reason was the performance of Nanaimo's Kevin Friesen. A senior on the team, Friesen finished second overall, just a second behind the winner from CSU San Marcos. Friesen and his teammates now have a week off before the 2009 NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Washington, on November 21.
November 2, 2009 - Sean Burke - Men's Basketball
This past weekend SFU's Sean Burke became the all-time Clan assist leader in men's basketball, passing Novell Thomas' record of 503. Burke registered five assists in the Clan's 78-75 win over Victoria to give the Clan their first win of the Canada West season, and now sits with 508 all-time career assists.
October 26, 2009 - Cassie Newbrook - Women's Soccer
After shutting out the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to win the 2009 Challenge Cup, senior keeper Cassie Newbrook is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 26, 2009. Newbrook made two key stops in the second half to force a shoutout, as the game was scoreless after 90 minutes. The Clan won the shootout 5-4 on a goal by Caitlyn Young.
Newbook and her teammates have the week off, and finish their regular season against Fraser Valley next week.
October 19, 2009 - Spencer Watt - Football
Playing without starting quarterback Bernd Dittrich and leading rusher Gabe Ephard, the Simon Fraser Clan needed a catalyst on offence, and the speedy Spencer Watt delivered.
The wideout's second quarter 91-yard touchdown reception broke the game open offensively for the Clan, and his acrobatic five catch 132-yard performance made the difference in the Clan’s 30-1 Shrum Bowl victory over the UBC Thunderbirds (1-6).
Watt was named the Shaw TV Player of the Game, and helped the Clan take the all-time Shrum Bowl advantage 16-15-1 in the series. The Clan (3-4) enter their bye-week this week, but are back in action in two weeks in Manitoba (2-4) to close out the regular season.
October 12, 2009 - Colin Streckmann - Men's Soccer
After scoring two goals in the Clan men's soccer team's 3-1 over St. Martin's on Sunday afternoon, Colin Streckmann (Burnaby, B.C.) is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week for the Week ending October 11, 2009. Streckmann and his teammates are in action on Tuesday night against UBC. Game time is set for 7 pm.
October 5, 2009 - Hide Ozawa - Men's Soccer
After posting two shutout victories last week, including stopping the #1 ranked Trinity Western Spartans 2-0, and lifting SFU over NCAA Division 1 power Seattle University 1-0, men's soccer goalkeeper Hide Ozawa (Victoria, B.C.) is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week. Ozawa is now 6-1 on the year, with four shutouts, and looks to continue SFU's winning ways this Sunday when the CLan host St. Martin's at 3 pm.
September 28, 2009 - Jessica Smith - Cross Country
After leading her team to their first overall victory of the 2009 season at the Evergreen Invitational, and winning the overall individual title, cross country runner Jessica Smith is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week. Smith, an NAIA All-American in 2007, is hoping to return to that status as the season progresses towards the NAIA National Championships in November.
September 21, 2009 - Cassie Newbrook - Women's Soccer
Playing on an injured leg, Clan goalkeeper Cassie Newbrook (New Westminster, B.C.) is the SFU Clan Athlete of teh Week after posting her third shutout of the season against #1 ranked Cal Baptist, and stopping three shot in the Clan's 3-1 win over Corban College. Against the top-ranked Lancers, Newbrook made seven saves, gutting out one of the best performance by an NAIA keeper this season.
September 14, 2009 - Alex Hanne - Men's Soccer
Transfer forward Alex Hanne (Calgary, AB), is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week after leading SFU to 9-1 win over Menlo College. Hanne scored six of the Clan's nine goals, tying a team record, and now leads the team in points with 13 points on the season.
September 8, 2009 - April Coffin - Women's Soccer
Newcomer April Coffin is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week after leading SFU to a perfect 3-0 record last week. Coffin (Surrey, B.C.) scored the game winning goal against Victoria on Sunday, and accumulated six points during a three game stretch. Coffin also assisted on two of the Clan's three goals in an overtime win over Evergreen State, and scored SFU's first goal in their 2-1 win over Chico State.
August 31, 2009 - Jeff Thompson - Football
After redshirting in 2008, SFU cornerback and return man Jeff Thompson (St. Louis, MO) made his presence known to the CIS on Saturday afternoon, taking the opening punt return 47 yards to the UBC 43. In a game where field position mattered, Thompson’s special teams contributions (six punt returns for 100 yards, one kickoff return for 34 yards) proved to be the difference. With 1:35 left in the first half, and UBC posting their only lead of the game 7-3, Thompson took the ensuing kickoff to midfield, giving SFU the field position they needed to set up their two-minute offence.
Later in the third quarter, Thompson took a punt return at his own 31-yard line, and was surrounded by blue UBC jerseys. The Bachelor of Arts major wiggled out of a pile, broke three tackles and wound up somehow on the UBC 38-yard line for a 41-yard return, setting up another SFU field goal.
