Mike Renney has been at the helm of the SFU Softball program since 1994 and in that time has developed Simon Fraser softball into powerhouse collegiate program that has produced 11 Olympians and sent many others to play for the Canadian National Team.
Entering the 2018 season, Coach Renney has a record of 619-349 for a .639 winning percentage. In SFU's second season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2012, Renney led the Clan to a second place finish, missing the GNAC Championship by just one game. SFU made its first GNAC Championship post-season tournament appearances in 2013. Prior to joining NCAA in 2010, SFU played in the NAIA where Renney led the Clan softball team to 14 NAIA National Championship appearances, all of which resulted in top 10 finishes, and four NAIA Championships in 1999, 2003, 2005 & 2010.
During his tenure at Simon Fraser, Renney and his staff have also produced some of the top players in Canada, many of which who have ultimately competed at this highest level in sport—the Olympic Games. To date 20, current or former SFU players, have represented Canada at either the Pan/American Games, World Championships or Olympic Games.
Coach Renney’s success on the field has earned him numerous honors including NAIA and NFCA ‘Coach of the Year’ on three different occasions.
A graduate of the National Coaching Institute with a degree in High Performance Coaching Studies, Renney also holds a Simon Fraser University BA Degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in Kinesiology as well as a Graduate diploma in Business Administration from SFU.
Coach Renney also has the distinction of being the first softball coach in Canada to receive full certification at level 5 in the National Coaching Certification Program.
When it comes to knowing what it takes to compete at the highest levels in sport, coach Renney can speak from experience having himself served as a member of the Canadian National Team coaching staff for the better part of three Olympic quadrennials (1994-2004). First as an assistant coach with Team Canada from 1994-2000 and head coach from 2001-2004. Renney has coaches at numerous international events including; the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Championships, 1995 and 2003 Pan American Games and the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
Coach Renney has also been recognized for his outstanding abilities in the sport of softball in being selected to represent the International Softball Federation as a lead clinician that saw him travel to Africa in 2001.
