Box Score Lacey, WA – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team scored five goals in the first half, en route to defeating the Saint Martin's Saints 7-1 on Thursday afternoon in Lacey, WA.
“Our squad turned in a very good performance today,” said head coach
Alan Koch. “
Ryan Dhillon and
Justin Wallace were flying when they were on the pitch and a great first 30 minutes set the tone for a pleasing performance.”
The win means that the Clan now lead second place Seattle Pacific by nine points. SPU plays Western Washington tonight in Seattle and a WWU win or a tie in the game would clinch the Clan's third straight GNAC conference championship.
An SPU win would leave the Clan with an opportunity to clinch the conference title in Seattle, WA on Saturday night when SFU visits SPU at 7:00 p.m.
The scoring got started in the sixth minute for SFU when
Justin Wallace (Kamloops, BC) scored his eighth of the season with help from Quante Abbott Hill Smith (Brampton, ON) and
Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC).
Ryan Dhillon (North Delta, BC) made it 2-0 in the 11th minute with a shot from the top of the box into the top left corner and in the 16th minute, Dhillon made it 3-0 with another goal.
The Clan kept pouring it on when Basso scored his league leading 13th goal of the season in the 26th minute and
Alex Rowley (Maple Ridge, BC) wrapped up the first half Clan scoring, to make it 5-0, with his tally in the 40th minute.
Nate Barber put one on the board in the 41st minute for SMU to cut the lead to 5-1 but that was as close as the Saints would get, as
Joel Malouf (Kelowna, BC) and
Colby Liston (Glendale, AZ) added goals in the second half to make the final 7-1 for Simon Fraser.
With the win, the Clan's record improves to 14-1-1 on the season, 10-1-1 in GNAC action.
“It was great to get
Roman Doutkevitch (Saskatoon, SK),
Lucas Ferritto (Hamilton, ON) and
Marco Voegeli (Lenzerheide, Switzerland) back from injury today. We started five freshmen and got a lot of minutes out of guys that haven't played that much lately. I'm very happy with our team depth and the willingness of the guys to all play for each other,” concluded Koch.
The Clan will play their final road match of the 2012 regular season on Saturday when they travel to Seattle, WA to face Seattle Pacific at 7:00 p.m.
