Langley, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team has received a pair of honours from Basketball BC as head coach
Bruce Langford was inducted into the BC Basketball Hall of Fame while junior forward Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Vernon, BC) was named the BC University Female Athlete of the Year.
The ceremony took place on Saturday night at the BC Basketball Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner, held at the Langley Events Centre.
Langford enters the hall after 11 seasons with the Clan, where he has guided the program to five national championships in Canadian Interuniversity Sport and is currently leading the team into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
This past season, Langford led the team to a 17-11 regular season record before the team recorded their first NCAA post season win in the GNAC playoffs.
“It's a great honour,” said Langford on his induction. “It's kind of surreal. You just go about your business every day because you love your job and you love working with these great athletes. You never really expect to be recognized like this though.”
His career record at SFU is 293-71.
It was the second time in as many years that Raincock-Ekunwe has received the BC University Female Player of the Year Award.
She led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in points and rebounds this past season and surpassed her own record for double doubles in a season with 22.
“It's such an honour to get this award for the second straight year,” said Raincock-Ekunwe. “There are so many great players out there and to be chosen two years in a row feels great. I think it shows that I've been working hard and my game is improving.”
In the Clan's playoff victory over Seattle Pacific, she led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
