Sanchez Final Four

Lights go out in Georgia for the Clan

12/5/2013 10:41:00 PM

Box Score Evans, GA - In a game that was delayed 45 minutes due to light failure, the Simon Fraser University men's soccer team saw their 2013 season come to an end on the same pitch it ended on in 2012 on Thursday night as they dropped their semi-final match in the NCAA Championship Tournament 3-2 to the Carson Newman Eagles.

"We weren't good enough," said Head Coach Alan Koch. "At halftime I told them that the game wasn't over and that you have to play the full 90 minutes to win the game. We took our foot off the pedal after we scored. We had ample opportunity once we went up one nothing and could have gone up two, three, four nothing and the game would have been over at that stage, however we didn't and that is the sport that we play. We allowed them back in it, they out worked us tonight, so I take my hat off to them for that."

The Clan led 1-0 at the half but three Carson Newman second half goals ended SFU's season.

The shots were tied at 13 in the match while Brandon Watson (Victoria, BC) made five saves compared to four for the Carson Newman goalkeeper.

SFU opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) scored on an incredible diving header off a cross from Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany).

The Clan had several more scoring chances prior to the half but could not expand their lead, taking a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

In the 50th minute the Eagles tied the match when Ross Frame scored his 19th goal of the season on a give and go from 14-yards out.

Carson Newman took the lead 10 minutes later Sindre Welo, who assisted on the Frame goal, took a feed from Frame through the defender's legs and scored to make it 2-1.

The lead did not last long as Juan Sanchez (Armenia, Columnbia) tied the match on a goal much like the Clan's first, scoring on a diving header off a cross from Blagojevic who scored the Clan's first goal.

"We scouted them, probably more than usual. We knew about them, we knew what they were about. We just didn't execute," said Sanchez.

With time winding down and overtime appearing imminent, Carson Newman scored to make it 3-2 with just over a minute remaining as Joao Pedro Dowsley took a through ball and beat Watson with a shot off his left foot.

"It's a game of opportunities and a game of mistakes and I didn't think we took the opportunity tonight. They are a great team and they deserve to be in the final. They didn't take us by surprise at all because when you get to the Final Four, every team is a good team. They were a good team. They deserve to be in the final. They were better than us tonight. I think we need to give ourselves a bit of a head shake because this is the second year in a row we have come to the Final Four and been out-worked and there is no excuse for that," finished Koch.

The loss ends the Clan season after SFU captured their second consecutive conference NCAA West Region Championship and fourth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown.
