BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser University softball team swept their doubleheader against the Western Washington Vikings on Sunday, winning Game 1 7-2 and Game 2 7-0.
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the start in game one and pitched seven innings, allowing one run which was unearned. She was relieved by
Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) in the seventh who allowed one run but Lukawesky was forced back into the game when Bender was injured on a line drive straight at her.
Lukawesky struck out seven in the game. The win improved Lukawesky's record to 5-4 on the season.
Bender led the Clan offence in game one with five runs batted in on a grand slam, the first of her collegiate career, and a RBI single in the third.
"We really focus on mechanics rather then outcome because good mechanics will get you good results," said Bender. "We all did that against Western and took it one pitch at a time. On the home run, I just got a good pitch to hit, high and out, that I was able to make good contact on and it went over."
Bender was two for three in the game.
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) also had two hits in the game for the Clan, going two for three with a run scored.
Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) drove in the other two Clan runs, going one for three and scoring two runs herself. Her RBI's came on a single in the third inning.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) pitched a complete game, two hitter in the game two victory, striking out 10 in the game.
Baylak went two for three with a three run home run that capped off the Clan's third inning rally to make it 6-0.
Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, ON) opened the Clan scoring when she crossed on
Kaitlyn Cameron's (Langley, BC) RBI single before
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) scored on a single from Raison.
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) scored the Clan's fourth run of the game and the inning when she crossed on
Lauren Kolanko's (North Vancouver, BC) sacrifice fly before Baylak's home run.
Rosie Murphy (Markham, ON) scored the Clan's seventh and final run of the game when she crossed on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning.
The sweep improves the Clan's conference record to a perfect 7-0, while SFU is now 11-9 on the season, which puts the Clan in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The Clan will be back in action on Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon, when they visit the Western Oregon Wolves in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
