BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser University Clan student-athletes have come together this holiday season in support of Big Brothers.
For the past two weeks, Clan student-athletes have been collecting clothes for Big Brothers. Earlier this week,
Brianna Morrison and
Olivia Aguiar from the Clan women's soccer team, and
Helen Yan from the volleyball team, delivered 35 bags of clothing to Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver.
The donated clothing is sold by Big Brothers and the proceeds help fund mentoring and at-risk youth programs in the community.
The clothing was collected through a competition among Clan teams, organized by Morrison and Aguiar and members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, to see which program could collect the most donations over a two week period ending December 1. The Clan women's volleyball team collected the most clothing donations and won the competition, followed by the women's soccer and cross country teams.
The big winners, however, are the children who will be impacted by the Big Brothers' programs.
"We chose Big Brothers because we felt that we were extremely fortunate growing up to have so many positive mentors in our lives and we want other children to share this experience," said Aguiar. "Big Brothers changes lives through their mentoring programs for children."
This Saturday at the women's and men's basketball games against Western Washington in the West Gym, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting a bake sale. All proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of BC and Yukon. Tip-off to the women's game is 5:15 while the men's game starts at 7:30 pm.
