Portland, OR – Three Simon Fraser University women's basketball players have been named to the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team.
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) and Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) are repeat honourees from 2012-13, while senior Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) has been named to the squad for her first time.
Lowen, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts boasts a 3.45 grade point average while Van Laare is working towards a degree in kinesiology with a 3.36 GPA.
Reist who is close to completing her degree in archaeology, boasts a 3.38 GPA in the program.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must earn a letter, have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be competing in at least their second year of athletic eligibility at their university.
The Clan women are back in action Saturday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. in Bellingham, WA as they face the Western Washington Vikings in the final game of the conference schedule.
The game will have major playoff implications for the Clan as Lowen, Van Laare and Reist will try to lead SFU to a victory over their cross border rivals in a game that could decide second place in the conference standings.
Montana State Billings enters the final weekend of the regular season at 13-3 with two games to play and a win would clinch first place for the Yellowjackets.
The Clan and Western Washington are tied at 12-5 entering Saturday's game so the winner could hold second place all alone, or could be tied with the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves who enter the final two games of the regular season at 11-5.
AAU plays Seattle Pacific Thursday night and first place MSUB on Saturday.
The second seeded team will receive a first round bye at the GNAC Championship tournament next week.
