LACEY, WA – Freshman
Adam Jones scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 68th minute to lift Simon Fraser University to a 1-0 win over Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday.
The victory brought the Clan's record to 5-3-4 overall, 4-2-3 in the GNAC. The Saints fall to 3-9-1 overall, 2-7-0 in the GNAC
"We looked good at times and at times we looked like a tired team which sometimes happens when playing the second game of a road trip," said Simon Fraser head coach
Clint Schneider. "I'm glad we were able to grind this one out and pick up the shutout and the three points."
"We are showing some maturity and that's a good sign as we head down the stretch of this run we are potentially going to go on because maturity is what is going to put us over the top for the push," he said.
The Clan has lost just once in its last seven games, and during this streak, they defeated two ranked opponents in Seattle Pacific and Northwest Nazarene. The Clan lost 3-2 to SPU in the rematch on Thursday, the Clan's only loss during this stretch.
Saturday, Jones was unlucky not to score a second goal and freshman
Mamadi Camara was also robbed on an excellent scoring opportunity as the Clan outshot the home side 20 to five.
"Adam deserved another and Mamadi came close as well," said Schneider. "The keeper made some excellent saves."
Jones and Camara lead the Clan in goal-scoring, with six and four, respectively.
SMU goalkeeper Nick Rosato made six saves while
Brandon Watson made two saves for the Clan, who had the advantage in corner kicks 9 to 3.
Watson has recorded five shutouts in his last six games during which the Clan has only yielded 31 total shots on goal.
With tonight's victory, Simon Fraser has 18 points and was in second place in the GNAC pending the outcome of the evening contests on Saturday in GNAC play. The top five teams are separated by four points.
Simon Fraser is now home for a pair of games, Thursday, Oct. 22 against Montana State Billings, and Saturday, Oct. 24 against University of Mary, on Terry Fox Field beginning at 7:30 PM.
