Clan Celebrates 50th With Home Victory

Simon Fraser University celebrated its 50th anniversary with a 3-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the Clan men’s soccer team’s home opener Wednesday evening on Terry Fox Field.

BURNABY, BC – Simon Fraser University celebrated its 50th anniversary with a 3-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the Clan men's soccer team's home opener Wednesday evening on Terry Fox Field.

It was the first victory of the season for the Clan and first victory for new Clan head coach Clint Schneider.

"I am just excited for the guys to get their first win of the season because we deserved more than our record has shown (1-1-1)  and this will give us momentum and we will be a dangerous team moving forward," said Schneider.

It was a breakout game for the Clan, who had only managed to score once in each of the previous two contests. Wednesday, SFU peppered 27 shots at Coyotes goalkeeper Mike Warn, forcing him to make 10 stops, while scoring three times.

Late in the first half, Warn was called for a foul when he charged into a Clan player inside the box and SFU's Kyle Jones scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Jones placed a low, hard shot to the right side of Warn for his second of the season.

Simon Fraser held possession and was the more dangerous squad throughout the night, finally securing the insurance goal in the 76th minute. Adam Jones crossed the ball into the penalty area and Calvin Opperman directed a shot low to the left side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Adam Jones scored his first of the season on a penalty kick with three seconds remaining.

"I'm glad the score-line ended 3-0 because I think we deserved that," said Schneider. "We were the better team in the second half, creating loads of opportunities and we probably should have finished the game off earlier."

The win improves the Clan's non-conference record to 1-1-1. The team will play its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference match against rival Western Washington in Bellingham, Wa, on Sept. 19.

"I'm really proud of our guys because they just kept going and going and I told them afterwards that's the SFU way. We don't give a team an inch and we just keep going until we get that goal. We worked really hard for this one," said Schneider.

"The things we preach to the boys all the time about being blue collar and out-working teams is really who we are. The bedrock of all of our Final Four teams was hard work and I think we are understanding that, identifying with that, and allowing our talent to take over games.

"We have potential to be a special team if we do that game in and game out."

Clan goalkeeper Brandon Watson faced nine shots, making four saves, to pick up his first shutout of the season.

Referee Darnell Smith handed out five yellow cards, three to SFU and two to the Coyotes.

CSUSB saw its record fall to 1-1.
