Statistics and History
Since its inception in 1965, the Simon Fraser University Clan Athletics program has excelled in either the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) or Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). With over 50 National Championships, countless individual champions, All-Americans, All-Canadians, Rhodes Scholars and Olympians, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the SFU Clan brand is synonymous with building the consummate student-athlete.
Athlete of the year
Since its inception in 1965, Simon Fraser University has honoured its outstanding Clan athletes each year. In 2003 the University began a new tradition by presenting each male and female athlete of the year with a Highland Sgian Dubh in honour of the competitive spirit that each athlete has demonstrated and for the success they have achieved. A selection committee comprised of coaches, student-athletes and Athletics staff choose the Athletes of the year.
Highland Sgian Dubh
Highland Sgian Dubh (pronounced skeen doo) is Gaelic for black dagger. In Scottish folklore the Sgian Dubh was concealed beneath the armpit and worn as part of the traditional highland dress. The Sgian Dubh was often a highlander's only defence against surprise attacks from other Clans. When visiting a house on his travels, as a courtesy to his host, a highlander would deposit all of his weapons at the front door -- with the exception of the sgian dubh, which was shifted to his stocking where his host could see it. Highlanders did not feel threatened by their hosts but they feared surprise attacks from other Clans so they never felt safe fully disarmed.
The Sgian Dubh is said to symbolize the qualities of courage, respect, loyalty and honour traditionally associated with members of the Clan in battle.

Hall of Fame
When Simon Fraser University entered its third decade of athletic competition in 1986, it decided to look back upon its first two decades of competition by creating the CLAN Hall of Fame. The CLAN Hall of Fame is designed to acknowledge and preserve the many outstanding student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the rich athletic history that is CLAN athletics. A committee comprised of print, radio and television journalists selected the charter members of the CLAN Hall of Fame in 1986, and since then, the University has periodically inducted outstanding and deserving student-athletes.

November 9, 2009 - Kevin Friesen - Cross Country
The Simon Fraser University Clan men's cross country team put together an outstanding performance this past weekend at the Association of Independent Institutions Championship, and the principle reason was the performance of Nanaimo's Kevin Friesen. Newbook and her teammates have the week off, and finish their regular season against Fraser Valley next week.
October 19, 2009 - Spencer Watt - Football
Playing without starting quarterback Bernd Dittrich and leading rusher Gabe Ephard, the Simon Fraser Clan needed a catalyst on offence, and the speedy Spencer Watt delivered.
The wideout's second quarter 91-yard touchdown reception broke the game open offensively for the Clan, and his acrobatic five catch 132-yard performance made the difference in the Clan’s 30-1 Shrum Bowl victory over the UBC Thunderbirds (1-6).
Watt was named the Shaw TV Player of the Game, and helped the Clan take the all-time Shrum Bowl advantage 16-15-1 in the series. The Clan (3-4) enter their bye-week this week, but are back in action in two weeks in Manitoba (2-4) to close out the regular season.

After redshirting in 2008, SFU cornerback and return man Jeff Thompson (St. Louis, MO) made his presence known to the CIS on Saturday afternoon, taking the opening punt return 47 yards to the UBC 43. In a game where field position mattered, Thompson’s special teams contributions (six punt returns for 100 yards, one kickoff return for 34 yards) proved to be the difference. With 1:35 left in the first half, and UBC posting their only lead of the game 7-3, Thompson took the ensuing kickoff to midfield, giving SFU the field position they needed to set up their two-minute offence.
Later in the third quarter, Thompson took a punt return at his own 31-yard line, and was surrounded by blue UBC jerseys. The Bachelor of Arts major wiggled out of a pile, broke three tackles and wound up somehow on the UBC 38-yard line for a 41-yard return, setting up another SFU field goal.

It was Gerwing’s defence however that truly propelled the Clan over the weekend, drawing six charges, as the Clan totalled 19 steals over two games.
November 3, 2008: Bernd Dittrich - Football
After leading the Clan to their first playoff game in over four years, SFU pivot Bernd Dittrich orchestrated a spectacular offensive performance by the Clan in their 40-30 upset victory over the No. 4 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies this past Saturday.
Completing 14-of-26 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown and one interception, it was Dittrich’s work with the running game, most of which can’t be measured in statistics, that helped SFU upset the Huskies. Dittrich himself rushed for two touchdowns, however it was his ability to pitch the ball accurately at the appropriate time that guided the Clan’s option offence to rush for over 225 yards and three touchdowns.
SFU looks to keep that offensive success rolling as they head into Calgary next weekend against the Dinos in the Hardy Cup Canada West final, to be seen live on Shaw TV.
October 27, 2008: Greg Wallis - Basketball
A 2008 Canada West All-Star, Greg Wallis kicked off the 2008-09 campaign right where he left off, scoring a career high 32 points in the Simon Fraser University Clan’s 79-71 opening night win on the road against Trinity Western University. Wallis added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while shooting 10-for-16 from the field. Wallis scored 17 of his points in the fourth quarter, including eight straight during the final two minutes to give SFU the win. The Clan (1-0) are at Victoria next weekend.
October 20, 2008: Lucas Barrett - Soccer

October 12, 2008: Jeff Biles - Football
Seven games into the 2008 season, Jeff Biles (Burnaby, B.C.) is already being touted as the upstart Simon Fraser University Clan’s team MVP. The second year receiver/kicker/punter made perhaps the biggest play of the Clan’s season, sending SFU into the post season for the first time since 2003 with a 38-yard field goal as time experience to give Simon Fraser a 20-19 win over UBC in the 2008 Shrum Bowl. Biles finished the night 2-for-2 on field goals, punted four balls inside the 20-yard line for SFU, and caught a 13-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
October 6, 2008: Jeff Biles - Football
Already having broken a number of Simon Fraser University Clan records for punts, Jeff Biles (Burnaby, B.C.) literally accounted for all of the Clan’s points in a 10-8 overtime win for SFU over Manitoba. Biles connected on two-of-three field goals, including the 22-yard game winner in overtime, but it was his performance as a punter that was truly special. In a torrential downpour, Biles punting kept Simon Fraser ahead in a game that came down to field position, pinning the Bisons inside the 20 five times, including forcing Manitoba to start four drives inside their own ten. Two of those four times resulted in the Clan recording safeties, their only other scores of the game.
September 29, 2008: Chanelle Bradshaw - women's soccer
After scoring not only the first and second goals of her university career, but the tying and game winning goals in a critical 4-1 victory over rival Carroll College, Chanelle Bradshaw (Calgary, AB) is the SFU Clan Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 28, 2008.
September 22, 2008: Chris Folk - Football
In only his second game as the starting middle linebacker for the SFU Clan, Chris Folk (Kelowna, B.C.) was all over the field for the Clan in a 20-3 defensive shutdown of the Calgary Dinos. Folk led SFU with 7.5 tackles, including six solo tackles, while sacking Calgary quarterback Deke Junior once, and forcing and returning a Matt Walter fumble 31yards for the clinching touchdown against the Dinos. Folk now has 13 tackles on the season, including two for a loss.
September 15, 2008: Brian Ridgeway - Football
In his second season with the Simon Fraser University Clan, Brian Ridgeway (Grande Prairie, AB) was a central figure in the Clan’s defensive shutdown of the No. 2 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies. The former Junior Football star led the Clan with 7.5 tackles, one sack and one interception, and was all over the field making plays for SFU. In total, the Clan defence forced four interceptions and sacked the Saskatchewan quarterbacks a total of three times. Ridgeway was also part of a special teams unit that forced three missed field goals by the Huskies.
Ridgeway now leads the Clan with 21 tackles (fifth in the CIS), two sacks and three tackles for a loss.
September 8, 2008: Thomas Lindley - Men's Soccer
After a slow start to the season, the Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer team hit their stride over the weekend, shuting out two opponents, including an impressive 1-0 over the NAIA's No.1 ranked team the Azusa Pacific Cougars. In that match, playing with a man down for the majority of the contest, Clan keeper Thomas Lindley was forced to make four key saves to preserve the shutout, and has been selected the SFU Athletics Athlete of the Week.
September 1, 2008: Sarah Boulton - Women's Soccer
In her first season with the Simon Fraser Clan women's soccer team, Sarah Boulton has made an immediate impact, scoring five goals in her first four games, including the game winner this past weekend over Thompson Rivers University. The transfer from Capilano College perhaps was most impressive in her NAIA debut, scoring a hat trick in a 3-0 win over the University of Victoria.
August 25, 2008: Bernd Dittrich - Football
Simon Fraser pivot Bernd Dittrich is the Clan Athlete of the Week. In his first start as QB for the Clan, Dittrich was very consistent, completing 15-of-25 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns in the Clan’s (1-0) 24-10 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds (0-1).
Perhaps the most impressive statistic however was the fact that the Bachelor of Science student and former Vienna Viking (Austria) lifted the Clan to their first victory in over three seasons, ending a 25-game losing skid dating back to Oct. 23, 2004.
Dittrich’s first touchdown pass of his career came on a 41-yard touchdown strike to Jeff Biles, while three of Dittrich’s receivers finished the game with 75 yards receiving or more. Last season Dittrich saw little playing time, getting on the field only as a kick and punt returner, but that experience showed as Dittrich led his team with 59 yards on the ground.
The Clan are back in action on Aug. 30 as they travel to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears (0-0).
