SFU heads to Manitoba to finish season

CLAN Football: Shaw TV Preview - SFU heads to Manitoba to finish season

October 26, 2009

Burnaby, B.C. – In what will be the last CIS regular season game for the Simon Fraser University Clan football team, the Clan head in to Winnipeg this weekend with one thought on their collective minds, leaving the Canada West with a win. The Clan face a Manitoba Bisons squad that clinched a playoff berth last weekend and is looking to cement itself as the third seed in the Canada West playoff picture. Saturday’s game (Noon Pacific) will be carried on Shaw TV in Manitoba, however SFU fans are encouraged to contact their local Shaw TV provider to pick up the feed from Manitoba. The game is also available on UMFM Radio online at www.umfm.com.

“We want to finish the season strong,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson of the upcoming weekend. “We have one game left, and it’s very important that we perform in what will be our last CIS game. We also know that we are playing a team that is much better than what we saw in week two, [Manitoba] is going to be ready to play.”

Game notes: Saturday’s game against Manitoba will be the last for 18 SFU players who are in their fourth or fifth years of eligibility…. Anthony DesLauriers is currently first in career interceptions for players that have played for the Clan in the CIS with 12, and is three behind Greg Frers for third on the all-time Clan list. Greg Nyte holds the Clan record for career interceptions with 25… Manitoba only scored once on SFU in the last game they played, on a record tying 129-yard missed field goal return by Jeremy Botelho… SFU held Manitoba to 69 total yards in that game… SFU has won only once in Winnipeg, defeating Manitoba 16-12 in 2003… Quarterback Bernd Dittrich (shoulder) is expected to travel to Winnipeg… Running back Gabe Ephard (ankle) is still listed as questionable… SFU is now 1-6 on the season, while the Bisons are 4-3.

CIS Football: #10 SFU dominates Manitoba 41-7
September 11, 2009

Burnaby, B.C. – Playing in front of a capacity crowd of 2765 in their regular season home opener, the No. 10 ranked Simon Fraser University Clan put on an offensive show, posting 500 total yards to the University of Manitoba Bisons’ meager 69, as the Clan rolled over Manitoba 41-7 on SFU’s Terry Fox Field.

In the win, Clan receiver Victor Marshall (Seattle, WA) looked liked he was playing on a completely different level, hauling in eight passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns to propel SFU’s offence. By halftime, SFU had out gained Manitoba 352-to-34 on the offensive side of the ball, yet only led 26-7 due to a CIS modern day record tying 129-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown by Manitoba’s Jeremy Botelho.

Clan quarter Bernd Dittrich (Vienna, Austria) finished the game completing 15-of-32 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the air, including a 62-yard touchdown strike to Marshall in the first quarter to put the Clan up 9-0. Dittrich also tossed a 7-yard touchdown strike to Owen Geier (Burnaby, B.C.), and rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Clan back-up quarterback Caleb Clark (Calgary, AB) tossed the final touchdown of the fourth quarter to Marshall to put the final cap on the game 41-7.

Clan kicker Jason Cook (Vernon, B.C.) finished the game with four points, connecting on his only field goal in second quarter to put SFU up 12-0. Dittrich’s touchdown pass to Geier in the second quarter extended the Clan’s advantage to 19-0, while Brandon Halverson (Phoenix, AZ) somehow eluded two tacklers on a 34-yard run up the left side of the field to extend the Clan’s advantage to 26-0. The Clan looked to add to that lead before halftime, however Cook missed right on a 30-yard field goal attempt, and from the back of the endzone Botelho raced 129 yards to make the score 26-7 at halftime.

Simon Fraser managed only a rouge in the third quarter, but put the game away when Dittrich plunged over the line for a one-yard scamper to go up 34-7. Marshall’s touchdown from Clark in the fourth was the final score of the game, as the Clan rolled on to win 41-7.

On the ground, SFU’s Gabe Ephard (North Vancouver, B.C.) finished the game with 80 yards on 11 carries, while Dittrich added 69 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. For the Bisons, starting quarterback Nathan Friesen finished 3-for-10 for 36 yards and one interception before being replaced by backup Khaleal Williams.

Defensively, SFU totaled three sacks and four interceptions, with Mark Bailey (Surrey, B.C.) leading in total tackles with 4.5. For the Bisons, Eddie Steele totaled 7.0 tackles, with Everton Black registering the lone Manitoba sack.

CIS Football: SFU breaks Shrum stalemate, handles UBC 30–1

October 17, 2009

Burnaby, B.C. – Capitalizing on two 80-plus yard second quarter touchdowns, the Simon Fraser University Clan won the 32nd edition of the Shrum Bowl on Saturday afternoon handily over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 30-1. SFU (3-4) now leads the all-time Shrum series 16-15-1 over UBC (1-6). It marked the final time the Shrum Bowl will be played as part of the CIS regular season, as SFU is moving to the NCAA and the GNAC conference next fall.

“It’s a good feeling to know that piece of hardware [Shrum Bowl] will be sitting in my office for another year,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson following the game. “It was a good win, having lost a couple in a row, it was important that we got one back as we head into our final weekend of the season.”

After the first quarter featured more weather changes (three – rain, fog and blinding sunlight) than points (0-0), Simon Fraser cornerback Marc DesLauriers (White Rock, B.C.) opened the scoring for the Clan a minute into the second quarter, picking off UBC quarterback Billy Greene and returning it up the right sideline 80 yards for a major to put SFU up 7-0.

SFU extended their advantage only three minutes later, when on play-action Caleb Clark (Calgary, AB) connected with Spencer Watt (North Vancouver, B.C.) in stride for a 91-yard touchdown strike, SFU’s longest offensive play of the year. Clark then drove 26 yards at the end of the second half after a short punt, capping off the drive with a touchdown plunge from one-yard out to put the Clan up 21-0 at the half.

After a single by the Thunderbirds in the third quarter, SFU recovered a fumble on a UBC punt return and drove 30 yards for another major, with Clark connecting on a seven-yard touchdown strike to Andy Emans to put SFU up 28-1. SFU added a safety in the fourth quarter to win 30-1.

Watt finished with five catches for 132 yards and a touchdown to earn Shaw Player of the Game status. It marked the final time Watt, a fourth-year senior, will play in a Shrum Bowl.

“It was special, we wanted to play well and I think we did that today,” said Watt following the game. “That said, we have another big game in two weeks, we have to start focusing on that today.”

Clark finished with 204 yards passing, completing 13-for-19 attempts with two touchdown strikes, while also rushing for a major. Brandon Halverson (Phoenix, AZ) was the leading rusher for the Clan, carrying the ball 14 times for 51 yards. On defence, Scott Puffer added 4.5 tackles, including two sacks.

For the Thunderbirds, Greene totaled 174 yards, completing 14-of-32 passes with one interception. On the ground, Dave Boyd rushed for 74 yards on 14 carries, while Serge Kaminsky had a team high 5.5 tackles with a half sack. Both teams totaled 311 yards offensively, while UBC fumbled twice.

Last time out for Manitoba:

Recap courtesy UBC Sports Information:

VANCOUVER - The Manitoba Bisons (4-3) ended the UBC Thunderbirds' (2-6) season on a losing note, earning a 25-17 victory at a gusty Thunderbird Stadium on Friday night.

The win means Manitoba has clinched a playoff spot. They can finish no worse than fourth based on tie-breaking scenarios. Next weekend the Bisons face Simon Fraser; UBC goes without a playoff berth for a third straight season.

"I thought our defence played outstanding throughout the whole game and I am proud of their effort," said UBC Ted Goveia. "It's always disappointing to lose but we lost to a pretty good football team (Friday night)."

After nickel and diming their way to a 9-3 half-time lead, the Bisons saw their advantage quickly disappear as the T-Birds scored the first major of the evening just 1:46 into the third quarter.

After a two and out start to the second half for UBC, Scott Thiessen made a big play of special teams forcing a turnover for the T-Birds. Manitoba's Jeremy Botelho bobbled the return at his own 21-yard line and Thiessen made a spectacular play by simultaneously knocking Botelho away from the ball and recovering the fumble.

On the ensuing play, Billy Greene found Spencer Betts in the corner of the end zone to put UBC for the first time 10-9. It was the duo's fourth TD connection on the season and it gave the T-Birds their first, and only, lead of the day.

With the increasingly vicious wind at their back, UBC continued to press in the third quarter but it looked like the Bisons had a chance for the lead midway through the quarter with a drive deep into T-Bird territory.

Manitoba QB Nathan Friesen took a shot to the end zone but was picked off by standout UBC safety Alex Babalos. UBC couldn't make much out of the swing in momentum, however, as Everton Black came up with a huge stop for the Bisons on third and one as he stuffed Billy Greene short of the first down to get the ball back.

The Bisons took advantage and Scott Dixon's 22-yard field goal at the 10:08 mark of the third frame put Manitoba up for good.

The visitors then turned to their power running game to shut the door on any UBC comeback attempts and Chad Young put the Bisons ahead 19-10 just before the end of the third quarter with a two-yard plunge. Young carried the ball on five of the six plays on the drive, gaining all 40 yards as Manitoba punished UBC up the middle.

The T-Birds made it interesting with a Dave Boyd touchdown three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Bisons used the wind to their advantage late, turning a couple short fields into a pair of Dixon field goals to seal the win.

Matt Henry led the Bisons offence with 30 carries for 150 yards with Young adding 47 and Friesen 45 as Manitoba amassed 273 yards on the ground.

Boyd picked up all 74 of his rushing yards in the fourth quarter as UBC worked a lot through the air as they were playing catch up most of the game. Greene ended the day 15-of-33 for 188 yards with one score and one interception.

The game got off to slow start as a 50 minute injury delay early in the first quarter kept both teams out of synch in the first half.

UBC receiver Brent Borthistle went down with a leg injury that stopped play and sent both teams sent back to their dressing rooms just under four minutes into the game.

When play resumed, Michael Guidi converted on a 31-yard field goal to knot the score at 3-3. Dixon had put the Bisons up 3-0 with a 10-yard field goal on Manitoba's opening drive. Manitoba added a pair of rouges and safeties in the second quarter as both offences sputtered with the wind pinning UBC deep in their territory.

Babalos capped off an outstanding second CIS season with 15.5 tackles and the one interception. The UBC safety all but wrapped up top spot in CW tackles this season as he leads the league with 65. Alberta's Jean-Marc Jones currently sits second overall with 45.5.
