Shelley Howieson

Shelley Howieson has been the Head Coach of the Simon Fraser University women’s soccer program since its inception in 1988.

During her tenure, Howieson has guided the Clan to 17 winning seasons, two NAIA National Championships (1996, 2000) and has compiled an impressive 270-115-44 coaching record heading into the 2011 season. Her coaching experience spans over 30 years, and includes numerous coaching appointments to senior provincial teams. The Canadian Soccer Association has honoured Howieson as the 3M Coach of the Year and in 1995 Howieson was nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award.


Howieson has branded the women’s soccer program with her own personal style, a highly competitive, well-rounded program that is recognized across North America as a collegiate powerhouse. With National Championships in 1996 and 2000, a string of three consecutive National Finals (1996-1998) and NAIA Championship appearances in ten of the past 13 years, Howieson has created a culture of champions on Burnaby Mountain. During this time Howieson has been named NAIA Coach of the Year twice, as well as Coach of the Year by Sport BC and BC Soccer. Howieson’s teams also excel in the classroom, demonstrated by the numerous athletes who have been recognized as Academic All-Americans.

Shelley was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame as part of their 2010-11 class along with National Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen and legendary baseball Manager Bobby Cox, among others.   She was inducted at the 2010 NAIA National Women’s Soccer Championship in Decatur, AL on November 28, 2010. 

Ari Adams

Ari Adams joined the Clan in the fall of 2007 as a player and went on to be a four year starter for the team. During her time Adams played in both centre midfield and centre defense positions, whilst being a constant leader for the team as a two year captain. Leading the Clan to A.I.I title in her senior year, Adams was named tournament MVP, was selected to the A.I.I all-conference team, and achieved all-American honourable mention. Adams currently plays for Surrey United Women's Premier team who are 8 times provincial champions, and will be heading to Quebec to represent B.C. in this year’s national championship. Ari has a passion for coaching, and has been involved in youth academies in the Lower Mainland for several years. She has also founded and is the head coach for "Go for Goal" soccer camps in Maple Ridge, B.C.

Cassie Newbrook

Status: Goalkeeper Coach

The 2011 season was Cassie Newbrook's first season as the Simon Fraser University Women’s goalkeeper coach. Cassie Newbrook recently completed her collegiate career with SFU in 2010 as the starting goalkeeper for the program from 2006-2010. During her collegiate campaign, she received NAIA All-American Honorable mention in the 07/08 and 09/10 seasons. Cassie earned spots on the First team All-Region team in 2007 and First team All-Conference team in 2009. In her final season, Cassie was named team co-captain and helped lead her team to the first round of the NAIA National Championships. During Cassie’s final season as a member of the Clan, she earned the NAIA Champion of Character award for her display in leadership and integrity she demonstrated on and off the soccer pitch. Additionally, Cassie was named the women’s soccer team Most Inspirational player and was the recipient of Simon Fraser University’s Rick Jones Courage award for demonstrating leadership, strength and determination while dealing with adversity. Cassie has been coaching both academy and youth goalkeepers in the Lower Mainland for the past four years.
