After finishing second the year prior, SFU began the 1999 season with one singular focus – to win its last game. Ranked No. 1 in the preseason, SFU was a nearly unstoppable force, finishing the regular season 40-7 against NAIA and NCAA competition.

The 1999 team lost one game to NAIA competition all season and posted the first 40-win season in SFU history.

SFU won five straight games to capture the NAIA National Championship, outscoring its opponents 44-9. Sophomore pitcher Cathy Iggulden threw 12 strikeouts and was named MVP while freshman first base Angela Lichty had four RBI as SFU defeated Oklahoma City 7-3 in the final.

The 1999 team featured two future Canadian Olympians – Lichty and junior outfielder Sasha Olson – and was led SFU and Canadian national team coach Mike Renney.
