Carol Huynh was a pioneer in women’s wrestling. She came to SFU before a women’s program existed, occasionally competing for the men’s varsity team.
Huynh won bronze and silver medals at the World Championships in 2000 and 2001, respectively, and with the start of the SFU women’s program, she led the Clan to the first North American Collegiate Championship in 2002, and then to its first of six CIS national championships a year later.
A native of Hazelton, BC, Huynh won 126 matches competing for SFU which at the time would have placed her fourth overall in school history – male or female.
Huynh’s crowning moment came at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she won Canada’s first Olympic gold medal in women’s wrestling. She also won bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games.
