Gary MacDonald’s freshman season in 1972 marked the beginning of an outstanding collegiate and international career. A native of Mission, BC, Gary helped Simon Fraser win its first of nine straight NAIA national championships. In 1975, Gary (top right) captured three individual NAIA national titles in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and 100-yard butterfly.

While attending SFU, Gary won gold and bronze medals at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games and two silver medals at the 1975 Pan American Games. Gary won a silver medal for Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics as a member of the 4x100-metres medley relay team.

Gary was the Canadian record holder in the 50-metres freestyle. He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.
