Joyce Sadowick-Yakubowich was a Simon Fraser University student before there was a varsity women’s track and field program at the university.  
 
A 400 metres runner, Joyce competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. In 1975 she upset the track world, winning the Pan American Games 400 metres in a record time of 51.62 seconds. She also led the Canadian 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams to gold and bronze medal finishes, respectively, at those games. 
 
Joyce was named Sport BC Athlete of the Year in 1974.
