After playing high school football at Notre Dame, Lui played wide receiver as well as kicker/punter at SFU. He recorded 175 career points, won NAIA All-District 1 Honours twice, and was named an All-Northwest All-Star.

He was picked by the BC Lions fifth overall in the 1976 CFL Canadian Draft, starting a 25 year career in the Canadian Football League that spanned four decades before he retired in 2000. During that time, Passaglia was a CFL All-Star four times, a CFL West All-Star nine times and won three Grey Cups.

He retired as the CFL leader in points (3991), most converts (1045), most field goals (875), best single season field goal percentage (91%) and most single season points (309).
