    Terry Fox Humanitarian Inductee
Terry Fox was an SFU student and member of the junior varsity basketball team prior to losing his right leg to bone cancer in 1977, at the age of 18. Three years later, in spring 1980, Fox began his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for the disease. Fox did not finish the run, falling too ill to continue after 5,373 kilometres and 143 days.

Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981. The Marathon of Hope continues to raise hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide for cancer research. In British Columbia, the second Sunday after Labour Day in September is “Terry Fox Day”.

Terry’s No. 4 jersey is officially retired, and the Terry Fox Honourary Inductee category was established in the SFU Athletics Hall of Fame in tribute to a true Canadian hero.
