Clan comeback comes just short

11/8/2013 7:52:00 PM

Box Score Pomona, CA - The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team used a late comeback to erase a 12-point Cal Poly Pomona Broncos lead but the Broncos were able to sneak past the Clan in the end with a 66-64 victory.

"In the first half we obviously didn't shoot the ball well, luckily Rebecca (Langmead) kept us in the game," said Head Coach Bruce Langford. "In the second half we came out and gave them a good run. We had a chance to win it several times near the end. We had a good look on the last shot of the game to tie it."

The Clan shot 38 percent in the game and 36 percent in the first half but struggled from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 18 percent, going two for 11.

SFU also shot 47 percent from the free throw line.

"We just need to compete a little better the whole game and we need to be better from the free throw line. That hurt us in the end," continued Langford.

Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) had a double-double for the Clan with 15 points and dominated on the boards with 17 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the team in scoring with 20 points and also led the team in assists with six.

Jada Blackwell led the home side with 18 points while Ariel Marsh had 13 for the Broncos. Cydnie Jones led Cal Poly Pomona on the boards with 11 rebounds.

The Clan went into the locker room at halftime trailing 36-29 before the Broncos outscored the Clan 16-11 to start the second half, making the score 52-40 before the Clan came back.

Chambers got the comeback started with a three-pointer with 11:37 to play to bring the deficit down to single digits with the score 52-43.

The three-pointer by Chambers started a 24-12 for the Clan that culminated in a Langmead lay-up to tie the game at 64 with just under three minutes to play.

With just under a minute remainig, Blackwell scored for Cal Poly Pomona to give the Broncos the lead back.

Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, QC) almost put the Clan in front with a three-point attempt with 35 seconds left and Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) almost tied the game with a jumper as time expired but neither shot fell.

The Clan will be back in action on Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona once again. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

"We weren't very good against the zone in the first half but improved in the second half. We need to continue to move the ball, find open shots, adjust defensively and execute better on some things," finished Langford.
