Clan win in their second game against Cal Poly Pomona

11/9/2013 7:28:00 PM

Box Score Pomona, CA - After coming just short against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Friday night, the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team scored their first win of the 2013-14 season on Saturday with a 73-64 win over the Broncos.

"We played way more composed today than we did yesterday," said Assistant Coach Emily Wright. "We handled their zone a lot better and we were able to execute out of it."

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the Clan with 21 points in the game, 19 of which came in a big second half for the junior. She also had seven rebounds in the game.

Chambers was also a near perfect nine for 10 from the free throw line in the game.

The Clan's second leading scorer on the night was Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, QC) who had 14 points in the game to go along with six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Coming off the bench, Meg Wilson (London, ON) had 10 rebounds to lead her team.

Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) and Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) also hit double digits in points for the Clan with 10 each.

For the second night in a row, Jada Blackwell led her team in scoring with 21 points to match Chambers for the game high. She also led all players in rebounds with 18.

The game was as close as Friday night's in the first half as the two teams went into the locker room at halftime with the Clan holding a one point lead.

SFU jumped out of the gate in the second half, starting the half on a 13-0 run to build up a 14 point lead at 44-31.

Chambers scored two points during the run and 17 more the rest of the half to help the Clan keep their cushion.

The Clan's defence was instrumental in the victory as they held Cal Poly Pomona to 25 percent shooting in the second half and 14 percent from beyond the arc.

The win evens the Clan's record in non-conference play at 1-1.

Simon Fraser will be off next week before their home opener in the West Gym against the San Francisco State Gators in the West Gym at 7:00 p.m.
