Box Score Turlock, CA - The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team started the season on Thursday with their first of two non-conference games on the 2013 schedule.
The Clan went up against the top ranked school entering the season in the California Collegiate Athletics Association, the Cal State University Stanislaus Warriors and came out on the wrong end of a 6-0 score.
"We needed all hands on deck in this game and unfortunately a couple of players were not available against a tough team," said Head Coach
Shelley Howieson. "They have a really strong team and I'll be surprised if they don't make some noise in the tournament. Full credit to Simone (Tessler). In that position, she kept her head up and put forth a good effort the whole game."
Goalkeeper
Simone Tessler (Eugene, OR) got her first collegiate start and played the full 90 minutes for the Clan.
Warrior senior Karenee Demery caused most of the trouble for SFU, as the senior and two-time All-American scored three goals in the match.
Allie Dugan, Katelyn Nebesnick and Gabriela Vargas had the other goals for Cal-State Stanislaus.
While the result was not the one SFU was looking for, the newcomers to the squad did gain some valuable experience, as six freshman saw action in the game.
"Our freshman got some valuable experience against the best in the CCAA. That will frame some things up and they'll be a little more seasoned down the road when we play the better teams in our conference. At times in this game, we fell back into some old habits. We'll correct that and come back with a strong effort on Saturday," finished Howieson.
The Clan will have Friday off before they face the Academy of Art Urban Knights on Saturday as SFU concludes the non-conference portion of their schedule.
