Burnaby, BC – In the first game of this weekend's double header, the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team fell 74-61 to Cal State University – Dominguez Hills in non-conference action.
After playing to a 32-32 tie at the end the first half, the Clan struggled on the offence in period two, falling victim to the Toro's aggressive style of play.
"I think they outworked us today," said head coach
Bruce Langford. "We struggled on the offensive boards and took hurried shots, while the Toros showed an aggressive side and took themselves to the line 25 times to our ten.
Erin Chambers led all athletes from the floor with 22 points, but shot an unusual 9-for-20, far below her average shooting percentage, while the Toro's top three Monay Lee, Breanne Garcia and Taylor Champion combined for 44 points.
"
Elisa Homer and
Rachel Fradgley were bright spots as young players earning us rebounds, and
Ellen Kett was on the receiving end of two offensive charges," Langford continued. "But unfortunately we didn't take great shots and we will need to regroup for tomorrow's rematch."
The Clan took an early lead 37-32 in the second half, but was unable to contain a surging Toros offence that quickly rebounded to a 52-42 lead halfway through period two.
From there Simon Fraser's closest attempt at a comeback brought them within eight points of the visitors, but they ultimately could not close, falling 74-61.
The West region rivals will meet again for a rematch, tomorrow, Sunday December 21, in the Clan's final game of 2014 and their final non-conference match of the regular season.
Tip-off against the Toros will be at 1:00 p.m. in the West Gym, and fans can also tune into Clan TV's HD stream of the game by visiting ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2yE-hSeJFQ
