Clan get back in the win column

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- The Simon Fraser University volleyball team got back in the win column Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords at the 2014 GNAC/PacWest Tournament.

It was the Clan's first win over an NCAA Division II competitor this season, and their fifth non-conference win of 2014.

"I was really happy with the composure we showed throughout the match," said Head Coach Gina Schmidt. "The girls fought hard to overcome big deficits in both the second and fourth sets. It was our best passing game of the tournament and that allowed us to run our offense effectively, especially to our middles."

SFU started strong, taking an early lead in the first set 16-10. From there, the Clan would only allow Chaminade to score four more points, as SFU would take the first set 25-14.

In the second set the Silverswords returned with enthusiasm, playing a tighter game and challenging the Clan defence. Chaminade would lead 20-14 over the Clan before Schmidt would call a timeout to help the team regroup.

SFU would go on to score 13 points to the Silverswords' five and take the second set 27-25 in a thrilling comeback.

In the third set Chaminade's pressure finally culminated in a win as they took one back from the Clan winning 25-22, but SFU remained undeterred heading into the fourth set.

The team's traded point in the fourth until Chaminade was able to take a 23-18 lead late in the set, but once again the Clan showed their determination battling back for a 26-24 victory, ultimately taking the match 3-1.

Kelsey Robinson had a season-high 18 kills in the match while Mackenzie Dunham and Amanda Renkema added 13 and 10 respectively.

Alison McKay had 15 digs for SFU while Jessica Young added 10, and setter Brooklynn Gould-Bradbury finished the game with 50 assists.

The win brings the Clan's record to 5-2 in non-conference play; a record they will look to build on this afternoon against Academy of Art University in the final match of this weekend's tournament.
