PORTLAND, Ore.—Second-half goals by freshmen Amanda Klep and Sydney Van Steenberge lifted Concordia University to a 2-0 win over Simon Fraser University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer action Thursday evening at Tuominen Yard.
The Cavaliers handed Simon Fraser its first road loss of the season and dropped the Clan from second to fourth place in the tight GNAC standings with a 4-3-1 record and 13 points. Concordia, which responded from its first GNAC loss of the season with a 2-0 win at home against Simon Fraser, now sits in second place in the conference with Seattle Pacific.
Simon Fraser, Concordia and Seattle Pacific all started the week tied for second in the GNAC.
The Cavaliers (8-2-2, 5-1-1 GNAC) were coming off a 3-1 loss to Seattle Pacific. The Falcons defeated MSUB 1-0 Thursday evening to hold on to its share of second place.
Simon Fraser, off to its best start since 2010 at 6-3-2 overall, dominated play in the early minutes with several scoring chances and corner kick opportunities. The Cavs came back late in the half to overtake the Clan in total shots—7 to 5—but neither team was able to solve the defenses.
Concordia seized the lead moments into the second half as redshirt freshman Amanda Klep found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal after a leading cross by McKayla Madison.
Playing left of center, Madison slid a pass through a pair of SFU defenders where Klep found the ball near the penalty spot for a low 10-yard strike just inside the right post.
In the 71st minute, Van Steenberge provided the insurance goal for the Cavs off a corner kick. Van Steenberge used a one-time flick to direct the ball over SFU keeper
Priya Sandhu.
CU directed 13 shots at the Clan goal forcing Sandhu to make three saves on the day. Sandhu saw her record drop to 6-3-2. Olivia Brock collected five saves to earn the win in goal for Concordia, improving to 7-1-2 on the season with her sixth shutout.
This was the second of five straight road contests for the Clan, although the team is idle this weekend.
Simon Fraser's next game is on the road Oct. 22 against Western Washington University. The Viking are in first place with a 7-0-0 record in the GNAC and 12-1-0 overall.
Simon Fraser is hosting the GNAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time with the semifinal matches on Thursday, Nov. 5 and the championship final set for Saturday, Nov. 7.
