Clan set to host Academy of Art in NCAA season opener

SFU looking to start on the right foot as they begin pursuit of NCAA tournament berth

The Basics:
The SFU Clan women's soccer team (1-0-2 in three exhibition matches) are set to open their 2016 NCAA season at home, as the Academy of Art Urban Knights will make their way to Terry Fox Field on Burnaby Mountain this Friday, September 2. The two sides are set to clash at 4:00 pm, and the game will be webcast in HD on Clan TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31HC1R-cvYA.

Coming in:
After a win over Douglas College and a tie against the Victoria Vikes, the Clan closed out the exhibition portion of their schedule with arguably their most impressive performance, earning a 1-1 draw against the Canadian Interuniversity Sport-champion UBC Thunderbirds. Senior forward Olivia Aguiar got the lone goal for SFU, connecting on a well-struck corner from Teagan McManus.

The match against the Clan will also serve as Art U's season opener, coming on the heels of a scrimmage schedule that saw them take on the Sonoma State Seawolves, the West Valley Vikings, and San Fransisco State Gators.

Key Storylines:
- Though the game isn't an in-conference showdown, it could have huge ramifications in terms of the end of season rankings used to determine seeding in the NCAA Tournament – voters look to these Regional games as good indicators of a team's ability to compete with teams from all over Division II.

- The matchup against the Urban Knights will mark the first meeting between the two clubs since September 7, 2013, a game in which the Clan fell 2-1. Aguiar is the only remaining player from that 2013 squad.

Players to Watch:
Jenna Baxter – a dynamic two-way athlete, the Surrey, BC-born midfielder returned home to SFU after a productive freshman season (19 appearances, two assists) with the Pac-12's Oregon State Beavers.

Dani Tellez – Art U boasts an intriguing Division I transfer of their own in the dynamic defender, formerly of the University of Akron. Tremendous athleticism and mobility are her hallmarks from the backline.

From the Coach's Mouth:
"It will be the season opener for both teams, so both sides are going to be out looking for a win," remarked SFU head coach Annie Hamel. "We really want to get a win to set the tone for our season and how we want to play going forward. We may not have seen this team in a while, but honestly, it doesn't really matter who we're playing – we just want to get the result."
