IRVINE, CA
- The SFU Clan women's soccer team (2-1-1) were handed their first defeat of the season on Tuesday afternoon, as they fell 4-0 on the road to the Concordia University Irvine Eagles (3-0-1).
Snapping SFU's clean sheet streak at just under three-and-a-half games, CUI got first-half markers from Natalie Werner and Kryssa Johnson before McKenna Carrillo and Lizette Luna sealed the result with second-half goals.
Werner started the scoring for the Eagles 20 minutes into the opening stanza off a penalty kick. Stepping up to the spot, Werner made no mistake, beating SFU goalkeeper
Priya Sandhu clean.
"We hadn't been down a goal all year, so it was a learning moment for them," said Hamel. "[You] can't turn off after you concede one, but we conceded another just eight minutes later."
That second goal belonged to the sophomore midfielder Johnson, who took a nice ball from forward Tessa Taylor and put a strike towards Sandhu, finding the bottom left corner of the Clan goal.
The Eagles needed three minutes of the second half to ice the contest, as Carrillo and Luna both padded the Concordia lead before the game hit the 49-minute mark.
The Clan couldn't generate much on the attack against the Eagles, with a lone
Jenna Baxter attempt registered as a shot on goal.
After a loss like that, Hamel admits, the best thing to do is not to dwell on the mistakes made, but focus on not repeating them against the next opponent.
"All we can do is have a good week of training and get back on track against Central Washington. Collectively, no one is hitting the panic button – it was a bad day, and everyone understands that now, we just have to get home and focus on Central."
The Clan will have just over a week before they take the pitch again, as they are set to face the Central Washington Wildcats in their first GNAC action of the season on Friday, September 22. Taking place in Ellensburg, WA, the contest is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 pm.
