BURNABY, BC – Although the 2020 GNAC fall season has been suspended until November 30th, the SFU Men's Soccer team is announcing the addition of some exciting new players who will be reinforcing the strength of the squad when soccer returns to Terry Fox Field. Transfers Tyler Dhillon and Conrad Cheng, along with freshmen twin brothers Jordan and Justin Baker, have all signed their National Letters of Intent to play for Canada's NCAA Team.
Tyler Dhillon –
Surrey, BC / Semiahmoo Secondary / UBC Okanagan
Position: Midfielder/Defender
Height: 6'0
Club Team: Surrey United SC
Schneider: "Tyler is a talented footballer that can play as a defensive midfielder or as a center back. He had a very good two years at UBCO with that program and will bring a lot of experience and ability to the team. We are always excited to bring a player back to the lower mainland."
Dhillon will be coming in to the SFU program as a junior transfer from UBCO. He was nominated for the Male Rookie of the Year Award coming off his freshman year as a starter. He is planning on continuing his studies in Kinesiology at SFU, hoping to one day become a physiotherapist.
Why SFU? "I chose SFU because of its reputable soccer program and because it is well-recognized academically. Transferring to SFU allows me to be closer to home, therefore, be able to spend more time with family. I enjoyed my time and experience at UBCO, the role I had on the team allowed me to further develop as an athlete. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to competing and finishing my undergraduate degree at SFU."
Conrad Cheng –
Oslo, Norway / Wang Toppidrett / University of New Hampshire
Position: Winger/Forward
Height: 5'9
Club Team: Skeid Fotball
Schneider: We are very excited to add a player of Conrad's quality. He fits the style of Winger we look for with his ability to isolate fullbacks and beat his player consistently. He has a tremendous engine and is very fast. We look forward to Conrad joining us on the Mountain this fall.
SFU Men's Soccer is lucky to be adding another quality player hailing from Scandinavia. Cheng, who is originally from Oslo, has played at the University of New Hampshire since 2017 where his team solidified a spot in the sweet sixteen at the 2017 NCAA tournament. In 2018, Cheng was also a part of UNH's first ever America East conference title.
Why SFU? "I was looking for a fresh start and to me SFU felt like the natural place for just that after talking to Clint. I was very impressed with the overall package SFU had to offer and I am super excited to get started. It is a highly competitive soccer program and I believe I will be a great fit."
Jordan Baker –
Hamilton, ON / St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5'9
Club Team: Oakville Blue Devils FC
Jordan started every game during his time on the Oakville Blue Devils where he scored 5 goals and 10 assists in the 2019 season. At St. Thomas More, he went on to win the City Championships alongside his twin brother Justin in 2018.
As an honour roll student every year of his high school career, he hopes to go on into the medical field and study Health Sciences at SFU.
Why SFU? "SFU can offer me great academics and will challenge me athletically allowing me to pursue my passions at school and on the pitch."
Justin Baker –
Hamilton, ON / St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5'8
Club Team: Oakville Blue Devils FC
On top of winning the City Championships in 2018 alongside his brother Jordan, Justin was able to secure the game winning goal that earned his team the league title. His scoring ability came in clutch once again at the 2019 Semifinals where he scored the game-winning goal that would take the team to the City Championships for another shot at the title.
As a consistent student in high school receiving honours every year, Justin hopes to follow a similar route as his brother in Health Sciences at SFU.
Why SFU? "I choose SFU because of the beautiful location, well-known academics and nationally ranked soccer team."
Clint Schneider commented on the pair, who will be one of three sibling duos currently playing for the SFU Men's Soccer team: "Jordan and Justin Baker are two players that we have coveted for a long time. They fit our specific footballing identities we look for in Midfielders. Both have a tremendous engine and are very quick. I think what sets them apart from other players we looked at is their footballing IQ and technique," said Schneider. "We have had several fantastic central midfielders come through the program and I believe Jordan and Justin will continue that tradition. It is also very special to grab a couple players from Ontario. We have had several really good players from there in the recent time – Shane Satar, Josh Bennett,
Lucas Ferritto, Tom McCole, Manvir Brar,
Scott Shewfelt and
Jonathan Kisse to name a few. So, it's nice to continue to tap into that market."
