SFU completes record-setting weekend in the pool against Seattle U

12/5/2021 9:57:00 PM

CORRECTION:  The SFU records list the all-time fastest swimmers, not the fastest swims in school history. Each swimmer listed only has their top time recorded. A swimmer will only appear once on the list even though they may have recorded multiple top times within the event listed. This story has been corrected to reflect this.

SEATTLE  – It was a big weekend for the SFU men's and women's swim teams as they set one school record and multiple swimmers swam fast enough to enter their names on the school's all-time top-five swimmers lists, dominating NCAA Division I Seattle U Redhawks over a three-day meet at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.

It was another incredible mid-season performance from the swimmers who earlier this season won 28 of 38 races over three days at the Winter Collegiate Invitational. When the Seattle U dual meet concluded Sunday evening, SFU had won 28 of 34 races. The men's team won 10 individual races and three relays. The women captured 11 individual events and all four relays.

Fresh off his medalist performance at the Toyota US Open in Greensboro, North Carolina, Collyn Gagne flew to Seattle where he set the SFU record in the 200-yard breaststroke on Sunday, easily winning over Seattle's Kyle Bailey. Gagne touched the wall in 1:59.58 to eclipse the 2019 record of 1:59.91 held by Antonio Morino. Gagne's split times were 27.00, 30.32, 31.00 and 31.26.

On Friday, Kennedy Loewen almost broke her school record in the 200 individual medley when she touched in 2:03.89, just off her record 2:03.61 set earlier this year.

Highlights from races on Saturday:
  • Amar Fejzic won the men's 100 butterfly in 48.71. Fejzic currently ranks third fastest in school history, and he narrowly missed his own mark of 48.32 in the event.
  • Mathew Fuller won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:38.18 but his morning swim in the prelims was slightly faster at 1:38.15.
  • Isabelle Roth won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.76 to crack the school's top 5 list with the third fastest time. The school record is held by former NCAA champion Mariya Chekanovych, 1:01.50, set in 2013.
  • Jayden Cole won the men's 100-yard backstroke with swims of 48.96 in the prelims and 49.00 in the final. Cole narrowly missed the school record set by teammate Jimmy Zhang this year of 48.49.
  • The men's 400 medley relay team of 1) Jayden Cole 2) Collyn Gagne 3) Amar Fejzic  4) Leo Fath won the race and their time of 3:20.31 ranks fourth fastest all-time.
SFU swimmers also set all-time top-five times on Sunday, highlighted by Gagne's record swim in the 200 breaststroke. Other top five times were turned in by:
  • Elyse Carnegie won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.82 and she now ranks as the fourth fastest swimmer in the event all-time
  • Jimmy Zhang won the men's 200-yard backstroke in 1:47.50. He is now third fastest all-time in the event.
  • Isabelle Roth is now among the top swimmers in the women's 200 breaststroke, after clocking 2:16.24. She now ranks fourth all-time
  • Finally, the women's 400 free relay swam the second fastest race in SFU history. The foursome of 1) Kennedy Loewen, 2) Kaleigh Sharkey 3) Isabelle Roth 4) Tori Meklensek clocked 3:26.76 just off the school record 3:26.00.
SFU will next be in action on January 12-15 at TYR Pro Swim Series in Knoxville, Tennessee and then a home and away meet against UBC Jan. 21 at SFU and Jan 22 at UBC.
