Freshmen star in Red Leafs' first conference win

BURNABY - The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team claimed their first victory in Great Northwestern Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, posting an impressive 2-0 triumph over the visiting Montana State Billings Yellowjackets (1-7-3, 0-4-2) at SFU's Terry Fox Field.

The Red Leafs (2-4-4, 1-3-2) were dominant going forward, throwing 21 shots attempts towards the Yellowjackets goal. Third-year defender Jenieva Musico cand freshman forward Kaiden Sherwood converted on a pair of corner kicks to pace SFU, with Sherwood's marker being the first of her Red Leafs career.

It took just 18 minutes into the opening stanza for the Red Leafs to draw first blood. Freshman midfielder Jazz Dev delivered a dangerous cross into the box, where Giulianna Zaurinni did well to make contact and drop the ball into the path of an open Musico. Musico showed excellent control in tight, trapping and firing off a quick strike before MSUB keeper Clare Keenan had the chance to react.

The chance was one of many throughout a dominant 13-shot first half for the Red Leafs, but it took until the final minutes of the frame for SFU to double up.

Again, it was Dev dropping a well-placed corner into the danger zone – this time from the left side. Midfielder Valerie Silva flashed her athleticism in getting her head on the high cross, placing it on a silver platter for Sherwood within the six-yard box.

The rookie forward made no mistake from in close, putting a one-touch attempt past Clare. With her two corners proving crucial in both Red Leaf goals, Dev's two assists earned her the first multi-point game of her SFU career.

The Red Leafs didn't allow the Yellowjackets to mount any kind of comeback in the second half, limiting Montana State to just 7 shot attempts, only five of which made it to SFU keeper Sarah Loewen. The clean sheet was Loewen's second full 90-minute blanking of the season.

SFU will not have long to relish in their first GNAC win, as they are set to welcome the Western Oregon Wolves (4-2-3, 2-1-2) in their next match on Thursday, October 6th. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 pm at Terry Fox Field.
