Charlie Dannatt leads SFU men to 6th on national championship preview course

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Charlie Dannatt finished seventh and led the SFU Red Leafs men's cross country team to sixth overall at the NCAA Division II Pre Nationals race hosted by Seattle Pacific on the Chambers Creek Regional Park course Saturday morning.
 
The race was run on the same course that will host the NCAA Division II Championships on Dec. 2 and 27 men's teams and 29 women's teams participated Saturday.
 
The SFU women were ninth overall with lead runner Grace Chalk placing 22nd overall.
 
The Red Leafs men placed runners 7-30-41-47-49 in team scoring on the 8-kilometer course for a combined 174 points. Colorado School of Mines runners swept the top three spots and all five scoring runners were inside the top 10. Colorado School of Mines finished first with 19 points, well in front of SFU West Region rival Chico State with 83. The Wildcats had all five scoring runners inside the top 25. GNAC rival Western Washington was fourth with 143 points.
 
The Simon Fraser men were paced by Dannatt. He was 13th at the first split and 12th at the second before pushing hard over the final third to finish seventh in 24:00.7. Dillion Powell of Colorado School of Mines was first in 23:19.80, 17 seconds ahead of teammate Loic Scomparin in second.
 
Behind Dannatt, in the overall individual racing, the Red Leafs finished 32. Sebastian Brinkman (24:45.20), 46. Ephrem Mekonnen (25:02.30), 52. Scott Arndt (25:07.90), 54. Henry Ruckman-Utting (25:08.40), 64. Kaelan House (25:15.20), 67. Aiden Good (25:19.40), and 130. Jordan Schmidt (26:20.30).
 
 
The 6-kilometer women's race featured two complete circuits around a loop with Naomi Bailey of Alaska Fairbanks winning in 20:46.10, nine second ahead of the next runner. Chalk was SFU's lead runner in 21:49.10 to place 22nd overall in the individual race.
 
SFU runners placed 21-47-56-60-62 in team scoring to finish ninth with 246 points.  Colorado School of Mines placed four runner inside the top 10 and all five scoring runners inside the top 15 to win with 37 points.
 
In the individual race, SFU runners were 51. Charlotte Prangley (22:27.00), 64. Ella Marion (22:39.80), 68. Megan Roxby (22:41.80), 70. Milena Kalisch (22:45.20), 79. Emily Chilton (22:56.70), 87. Kate Cameron (23:02.40), 104. Rachael Watkins (23:23.80), and 185. Elizabeth Vanderput (25:23.60).
