BURNABY, B.C. –
Ivy Threatful (Maple Ridge, B.C.),
Victoria Seal (Mission, B.C.),
Marquesis Haintz (Pitt Meadows, B.C.), and
Jade Trolland (Abbotsford, B.C.) were all a perfect 4-0 in individual matches on Saturday, as the SFU Red Leafs women's wrestling team impressed at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Red Leafs, who came in ranked No. 8 in the NCAA, went 3-1 over their four matches. Scoring dominant 39-5 and 36-8 wins against Adams State (Colorado) and Chadron State (Nebraska), respectively, SFU's true litmus tests came against their two ranked opponents.
Squaring off against the fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks, SFU won six of 10 bouts to claim a 24-18 win. In the 108-pound class, sophomore Threatful took a 10-0 technical fall win over Adriana Gomez. Seal (sophomore, 123 pounds) and Haintz (junior, 130 pounds) also bested their Colorado Mesa counterparts by tech falls, 14-3 for Seal over Hania Halverson and 10-0 for Haintz over Kaydence Boyd.
Trolland, a junior, narrowly escaped her 136-pound match with a 2-1 decision over Holly Beaudoin, while sophomore Page Maher of Port Alberni, B.C. (155 pounds) and reigning National Wrestling Coaches Association Region 6 Wrestler of the Month
Julia Richey (sophomore, Thousand Oaks, California, 191 pounds) both won their respective classes in convincing fashion.
With their three wins coming against RMAC opponents on Sunday, SFU's overall conference record for the 2023-24 season ended as a perfect 4-0. With that, the Red Leafs' secured their first regular season conference title in their inaugural year as RMAC associate members.
SFU's biggest test was saved for last on Sunday, as they went to the mats against the top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes to close out their day. With Iowa shorthanded, Threatful, Trolland, and junior
Maddie MacKenzie from Calgary (116 pounds) received wins by forfeit in their respective classes. However, Seal scored an 11-0 tech fall win over Iowa's Ava Rose, while Haintz against matched Seal with a 10-0 tech fall win over Emily Frost.
However, the Red Leafs were unable to clinch the decisive points from their other bouts, and the Hawkeyes eventually came away with the 24-23 win.
"Our wrestlers continue to improve," remarked SFU head coach
Justin Abdou. "It was definitely a nice win against Colorado Mesa, a team in our conference and region. They took it to us last year here and at the regional meet. Our athletes really got up for that match and they were excited with the outcome. Unfortunately, we really let the Iowa match get away from us. They are the No. 1 team in the country and came in with a depleted lineup. We had a chance to pull off a huge upset but came up short. We are ready for the break and if we continue to improve we can definitely challenge for a trophy in March."
The Red Leafs will next compete down in McMinnville, Oregon, as they're set to take part in the Linfield Mat 'Cat Invitational on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
