SFU Women’s Soccer Shuts out Stanislaus State with a 2-0 Victory

9/9/2024 10:31:00 AM

Box Score BURNABY, BC – SFU Women's Soccer secured a perfect start to their 2024 season with a 2-0 win against the Stanislaus State Warriors last Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Stadium.

Our team started the game on the front foot with relentless pressure and decisive passing to generate multiple chances in attack. We were able to break though in the 16th minute, as Isabella Muzzolini dribbled her way through multiple opponents before finding Raegan Mackenzie, who arrived on the cross to score her first goal of the season.

We maintained pressure throughout the half and were able to double their lead following strong play from freshman striker, Dariella Lopez. After turning her defender inside the 18-yard box, Lopez was fouled by a Stanislaus defender and earned a penalty kick. Sarah Caravatta dispatched the penalty kick in the 35th minute to ensure a 2-0 Red Leafs lead heading into the second half.

Both teams traded chances in the second half with a Red Leafs goal being called back for offside. SFU's team outshot the Warriors 20-9 in the contest with Sarah Loewen making four saves in the win.

"The players executed at a high level and should be really happy with their performance," commended Head Coach Carlo Basso. "We played a very good program today and looked decisive both in and out of possession. We'll enjoy the win and continue to focus on improving as we head for some very competitive games in Colorado".

With the win, the Red Leafs Women's Soccer team end their home opening week with a 2-0-0 record to start the season. SFU will look to continue their perfect start next week in Colorado when they face the Regis Rangers and Colorado Christian Cougars.
