Spokane, WA - Simon Fraser University cross country senior Lindsey Butterworth (North Vancouver, BC) finished 12th overall leading the Clan to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship on Saturday.

The field included 32 schools from across North America and 244 runners.

It was the second consecutive race for the Clan on the Spokane, WA course as the NCAA West Region Championship was held there two weeks ago.

"At the beginning of the season the goal was a top 10 finish so we're very happy with how things turned out," said Head Coach Brit Townsend. "We didn't have Kansas (Mackenzie) who had to drop out with a stress facture and that was tough she tried to compete and wanted to help the team but she was in agony over the first two kilometres. Unfortunately that probably cost us 60 or 70 points that would have put us in the top four."

Butterworth ran the six kilometre course in a time of 21:23.7 to lead her team in her final cross country race with the Clan.

"Lindsey was awesome. It was the first time she ever finished better than every Alaska Anchorage runner. It was a personal best time for her and in fact, our top three girls ran personal best times," continued Townsend.

She was the top runner from the west region, finishing one spot ahead of Alaska Anchorage's Joyce Kipchumba.

"My goal was a top 25 finish so I was just trying to go out with the people that I knew from our conference and our region," said Butterworth. "It worked out even better than expected and I'm happy with the results."

Fellow senior Kirstin Allen (London, ON) was second among Clan runners finishing 37th overall in the field, running in a time of 21:47.8. She was closely followed by sophomore Emma Chadsey (Pemberton, BC) who finished 43rd in a time of 21:51.8.

Senior Sarah Sawatzky (Chilliwack, BC) finished fourth among Clan runners and 97th overall in 22:34.6.

Coming in half way through the field of runners was freshman Rebecca Bassett (Nanaimo, BC) who finished the race in 22:47.5 and rounding out the Clan runners was senior Michaela Kane (Robert's Creek, BC) who wrapped up her Clan cross country career, running in a time of 23:22.7, finishing 176th.

The Clan had the second best finish among Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools and third best finish among schools in the NCAA's West Region as Alaska Anchorage finished fourth and Chico State came sixth.

"Our team went in determined and we had some bad luck with one of our top runners getting injured but that happens sometimes. We were just five points behind Chico State 45 points behind Alaska Anchorage. It just shows how talented this team is. We have the tools and the people to be among the best in the nation," finished Townsend.

It was the first appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship race for the Clan cross country program in just their second year of eligibility after transferring from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics where the SFU women won more NAIA Championships than any other school in history.

The Simon Fraser cross country team will now turn their attention to the track and field season which will begin in the new year.
