Lorne Davies Complex Renewal Project

The Lorne Davies Complex (LDC) at Burnaby campus is an essential component of the original vision for the university from SFU's first Chancellor Gordon Shrum, providing sports and recreation facilities for the university community. The complex is home to the university's pool, gyms and fitness centre.

Extensive upgrades to the LDC are required to provide a continued safe and healthy environment and to enhance student, athlete and community experience. The original building was constructed in 1965 with additions in 1973 (Central Gym), 2006 (West Gym and Fitness Centre) and 2021 (Stadium).

Planned upgrades to significant portions of the recreation and athletics program will require temporary closure of parts of the LDC as this work is completed. The focus of the work will be within the 1960s' original building, involving seismic, mechanical and plumbing upgrades along with new recreation change facilities and an upgraded pool deck. In addition, a new wrestling room and dedicated mechanical system will be completed within the 1970s' portion of the building. While there will be interior design upgrades and enhancements to sports and recreation spaces the bulk of the renovation (as identified above) will not be noticeable by users but needed to ensure continued operation of the LDC.

The LDC renewal project is committed to addressing, reallocating and moderately expanding the change areas to address gender equity. The change rooms will be fully redesigned to meet the needs for recreation change areas as well as the varsity teams. Gender neutral and accessible washrooms are located outside the West Gym, on the lower concourse; and in the stadium (lowest level outside the fitness center and on level 100 on main concourse). In addition, gendered washrooms are available on level 00, on the northside corridor.
