BURNABY, B.C. – Evan Mozzochi led the Western Oregon University Wolves with his 207 yards passing, 82 yards rushing and combined three touchdowns as the Wolves defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan football team by a score of 35-28 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Terry Fox Field on Saturday afternoon. SFU falls to 1-1 (0-1 GNAC) on the season.
Western Oregon came out strong, scoring 21 unanswered points including a Mozzachi 45-yard touchdown run and a Trevor Roush receiving touchdown. However, SFU's running game was strong all game, as Gabe Ephard put the Clan on the board with a 34-yard run into the end zone. Adryan Allen returned the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown before an 86-yard run from Ephard set up Bo Palmer for a 5-yard rush into the end zone to make it 28-14 for the Wolves. SFU kept the comeback surge coming as quarterback Trey Wheeler lobbed a pass up for Mathis Baumbach who caught the ball with his feet barely inside the line for the touchdown to make it 28-21 for WOU going into halftime.
The second half featured more of a defensive battle but Mozzochi was still at it offensively, faking a handoff and taking the ball ten yards into the end zone himself for a touchdown. SFU made it a seven-point game when quarterback Greg Bowcott rushed for three yards to get the touchdown, making it 35-28 for the Clan but it would not be enough.
For SFU, both Ephard and Palmer had a touchdown each while Ephard ran for 158 yards. Palmer had 124 rushing yards. Wheeler went 19-fo-32, throwing for 189 passing yards. For Western Oregon, Mozzochi went 18-for-30 in completions.
Next up, SFU takes on Dixie State in Utah on September 17 at 6 p.m.
