Clan can't get past Wolves

10/26/2013 5:24:00 PM

Box Score Monmouth, OR - The Simon Fraser University Clan's fourth quarter comeback attempt could not be completed as the Western Oregon Wolves prevailed 30-16 in Monmouth, OR handing the Clan their fifth straight loss of the season.

After a slow start to the game on offence, SFU found some life in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns.

"Our guys certainly played through the four quarters, but the turnovers and penalties just stopped anything we were trying to get going," Head Coach Dave Johnson said following the game.

On their first possession of the fourth quarter, quarterback Ryan Stanford (Phoenix, AZ – 26/44 293-yards 1 TD 2 INT) completed a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Kyle Kawamoto (North Vancouver, BC – 5 rec. 88-yards 1 TD) taking the ball into WOU territory. Two plays later, Stanford would connect with tight end Jamal Kett (Orangeville, ON - 7 rec. 97-yards) for a 17-yard gain before going back to Kawamoto for the 20-yard score. The touchdown made the score 27-9 WOU with almost a whole quarter remaining.

After allowing a field goal by Jose Correa to make the score 30-9 Wolves, the Clan again marched down field as Stanford found four different receivers for 57-yards. Runningback Steve Spagnuolo (6-42-yards 1 TD) would also add 11-yards on two carries, including a one-yard touchdown run closing the gap to two touchdowns.

That would be as close as the Clan would get however, as the Wolves were able to control the clock and keep SFU from scoring anymore.

To start the game, the SFU defence responded well by stopping Western Oregon on all three of their first quarter possessions, including two on fourth down. The offence though could not get into a rhythm to match, which saw Stanford throw a pick-six on his second pass attempt of the game.

The defence kept working relentlessly trying to keep the score close.

Defensive end Dylan Roper (North Vancouver, BC – 7 TKLS 2.5 TFL 1 sack) had a strong game on the defensive line and linebackers Casey Chin (Port Moody, BC – 16 TKLS 1 TFL) and Mitchell Barnett (North Vancouver, BC – 9 TKLS 1.5 TFL 1 sack) were flying all over making plays. As well, cornerback Eric Frain (Union, NJ – 5 TKLS 1 PBU) had a strong game in coverage, including deflecting a ball up in the air right to teammate cornerback Cairo Messer-Barrow (Hamilton, ON) who caught it for the interception.

Even with a strong showing on defence, the Clan still found themselves trailing 24-3 at halftime as the offence could not muster much in the opening thirty minutes.

The defence would only allow six more points in the second half, but the Clan could not score in the third quarter which made it more difficult to complete the full comeback. Western Oregon quarterback Ryan Bergman came in tied for first in passing touchdowns and second in passing yards per-game in the conference, but the Clan were able to hold him to just 190-yards passing and zero touchdowns.

"I tell you, defensively we played tough. We really played well on defence," finished Johnson.

With the loss, SFU is now 2-5 on the season and have finished the away portion of their schedule as their final three games are at home on Terry Fox Field. The Clan will take on Dixie State at 2:00 p.m. on November 2.
