Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team will play six matches in their spring schedule, including contests against the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Division I Gonzaga Bulldogs.
It will be the first competition for the Clan since a bittersweet 2012 season that saw the program capture their third straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship and first NCAA West Region Championship before losing in the Final Four.
Missing from the team will be seven seniors including 2012 All-American and GNAC Player of the Year Mike Winter (Vancouver, BC), Academic All-American and GNAC first team player, captain
Helge Neumann (Oslo, Norway), and five other players that have all been instrumental in the Clan's three GNAC titles.
The spring schedule will be an opportunity for junior
Marco Voegeli (Lenzerheide, Switzerland), All-American
Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC) and Player's Player of the Year
Justin Wallace (Kamloops, BC) to fill some of the leadership roles vacated by the graduating seniors.
Finally, the spring presents a chance for red-shirts and freshman to compete for starting positions on the 2013 team including former Whitecaps youth player
Paris Gee (Burnaby, BC), BCSPL goal poacher
Gilbert Kyne (Burnaby, BC), and six foot seven BCSPL goalkeeper
Simon Cohen (White Rock, BC).
In addition to their highly anticipated matches against the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Clan will fill out a challenging spring schedule against opponents from the VMSL, the CCAA and the CIS.
