Clan send six to NCAA Championship

Birmingham, AL - On Wednesday, the 2013 NCAA Division II Swimming Championship will get underway and six Simon Fraser University swimmers are taking part.

The Clan contingent is made up of two seniors, three sophomore and a freshman.

Freshman Mariya Chekanovych (Burnaby, BC) enters the meet with the top time in the nation in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. The 100-yard race will go Friday with the 200-yard race happening on Saturday.

She is also expected to take part in the 200-yard individual medley on Wednesday and is part of the 400-yard medley relay team that is ranked second heading into the event which races on Thursday.

Joining Chekanovych on that team Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, AB), Kristine Lawson (Coquitlam, BC) and Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, BC).

Cossey and Lawson will take part in several other events including the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Lawson also qualified in the 100-yard backstroke which goes Friday.

Lawson is a senior who concludes her Clan career this week in Birmingham.

Schofield will also compete in other events during the Championship including the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle, both on Thursday.

Sophomore Carmen Nam (Hong Kong, China) competes in multiple events this week as well, including the 1000-yard freestlye on Wednesday, the 400-yard individual medley on Thursday and the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle on Friday.

She wraps up the week in the 400-yard and 1650-yard freestyle on Saturday.    

Senior Jordyn Konrad (Salmon Arm, BC) wraps up her Clan career this week, representing SFU as part of the 200-yard, 800-yard and 400-yard freestle relay teams on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The 2013 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving National Championship will take place from March 6-9 at the CrossPlex Complex in Birmingham, AL.
