Birmingham, AL - After the first day of the NCAA National Swimming Championship, the Simon Fraser University women's swim team is tied for fourth place with 55 points.

The Clan are tied with Wayne State and trail first place Drury (104 points), second place Wingate (74 points) and third place Incarnate Word (60 points).
SFU's strong showing on day one has them well ahead of the 14th place ranking the Clan entered the competition with.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Kristine Lawson (Coquitlam, BC), Mariya Chekanovych (Burnaby, BC),
Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, BC) and
Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, AB) set a new school record and finished in third place on Wednesday with a time of 1:42.84.
Cossey also advanced to the final of the 50-yard freestyle competition and finished in seventh place with a time of 23.56.
Lawson also raced in the 50-yard freestyle and while she entered the race ranked 31st, she finished 15th overall and seventh in the consolation race, with a time of 23.79.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Chekanovych finished ninth overall with a time of 2:04.27, winning the consolation final and improving on her ranking of 26th in the NCAA.
The Clan women continue the 2013 NCAA National Swimming Championship in Birmingham on Thursday.
