BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Simon Fraser University swimmer
Mariya Chekanovych (Burnaby, B.C.) won her second NCAA Championship in as many days on Saturday, taking the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:13.35.
On Friday, she won the 100-yard breaststroke, to give SFU the school's first NCAA Championship.
Her time in the final was better than her qualifying time of 2:14.08.
Also on Saturday,
Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, Alta.) finished sixth for SFU in the 100-yard freestyle final in a time of 51.12.
In the 4x400-yard relay, the Clan finished 13th overall as the team of Kristine Lawson (Coquitlam, B.C.), Jordyn Konrad (Salmon Arm, B.C.),
Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Cossey swam in a time of 3:28.65.
Chekanovych's title was the second for the Clan swimming program and the third overall for SFU Athletics, as Helen Crofts (West Vancouver, BC) won the 800-metre indoor track and field title on Saturday as well.
Overall, the Clan, with only six swimmers in the event, earned a top-10 finish coming in at ninth place, moving up from the 14th-place ranking they held entering the event.
Four of the six Clan swimmers at the event earned All-American status.
