Helen Crofts (West Vancouver, BC) is one of four student-athletes to be named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Scholar Athletes of the Year for NCAA Division II.
Crofts along with Erin Alewine of Central Missouri, Danielle Williams of Johnson C. Smith and Mallory Sanner of Seton Hill received the honour based of having the greatest combination of academic achievement and athlete accomplishment in 2013.
A biomedical physiology major with a 4.13 cumulative grade point average, she earned the indoor track Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
Crofts won the women's 800-metre at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in an indoor season-best 2:05.96 with only one runner within four seconds of her.
She went on to win the 800-metre outdoor championship as well prior to being named co-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Female Athlete of the Year and GNAC Scholar Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Crofts earned All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor championships.
She recently competed at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia where she won a silver medal as part of Canada's 4x400-metre relay team.
Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are chosen from those who earned all-academic status with the USTFCCCA and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships.
Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner.
