St. Louis, MO - Four Simon Fraser University wrestlers have won Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association championships in their weight classes, highlighted by Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, CA) and Helen Maroulis (Rockville, MD) who each won their fourth title in four years of competition.
They are the first two wrestlers to accomplish that feat in the history of the WCWA as Anthony won at 109-pounds and Maroulis at 130.
Also taking titles for the Clan are Justina DiStasio (Coquitlam, BC) who won her third title at 170 and Jenna McLatchy (Chilliwack, BC) who earned her second WCWA crown at 191.
Anthony reached the final at 109 by defeating Daisy Santos of King University by technical fall before beating Campbellville's Breonnah Neal by fall to win the championship.
Like Anthony, Maroulis won her semi-final by technical fall and the final by fall, beating Kayla Brendlinger of King University in the semi-final at 130 before taking the championship by defeating Rachel McFarland of Oklahoma City University.
DiStasio took her two matches on Saturday by technical fall and decision to capture her third WCWA title, beating Lindenwood University's Gabriela Guzman in the semi-final and her Lindenwood teammate Victoria Francis in the final.
McLatchy won the final two matches in her weight class by decision defeating Northwest Kansas' Leya Justi Luafalemana in the semi-final and Malexsis McAdoo of King University in the final to clinch her second WCWA championship.
All four of the Clan's 2013-14 WCWA champions are seniors.
At 101-pounds, junior Darby Huckle (Sarnia, ON) improved on her third place finish from a year ago, taking second in her weight class.
Huckle defeated King University's Shannon Constantine before dropping the final to Emily Webster of Oklahoma City University.
Finishing third at 116-pounds was the Clan's Nikki Brar (Abbotsford, BC). Brar won by decision in her third place match against Cody Pfau of Oklahoma City University.
Freshman Mallory Velte (Sacramento, CA) finished close behind four time champion Maroulis in the 130-pound categorey, taking fourth.
Velta went 5-2 at the championship, taking her first two matches against Crystal DeVaughn of Northwest Kansas Tech and Olivia Cepak of the University of the Cumberlands.
She dropped her next contest but rebounded to defeat Mayleen Soto of Missouri Valley College, Megan Black of King University and Kayla Brendlinger of King College before dropping her final match and taking home fourth place honours.
Laura Anderson (La Quinta, CA) finished sixth as the freshman competed at 116-pounds.
Anderson went 4-3 at the event.
After a bye in the first round she defeated Shelby Morrison of Oklahoma City University.
She dropped her next bout but rebounded to defeat Michelle Lomas of Campbellsville and Shelby Morrison of Oklahoma City.
Earning a top eight finish for SFU was Monika Podgorski (New Westminster, BC) who won by fall over Michelle Organ of Campbellsville University to earn seventh place.
Also in the 109-pound categorey, Michiko Araki (Kumamoto City, Japan) earned a top eight finish.
Araki went 4-3 overall at the event defeating Wayland Baptist's Kristin Navarette, Jessica Marso of Menlo College, Jordan White of Missouri Baptist and Alexandria Campbell of the Universirty of the Cumberlands.
Jennifer Anderson (Pullayup, WA) wrestled for the Clan at 123-pounds at the event, while Madeline Millsip (Langley, BC) represented SFU at 136 and Maegan Kuruvita (Duncan, BC) at 143.
Four WCWA titles by Clan wrestlers tied King University for the most titles by any one school at the event.
