Nam becomes Clan's second All-American of the year

3/14/2014 9:41:00 PM

Geneva, OH - The 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships continued on Friday and Carmen Nam (Hong Kong, China) earned All-American honours thanks to her finish in the 200-yard butterfly final.

Nam finished eighth in the race, finishing in a time of 2:04.12 to earn All-American honours by virtue of finishing in the top eight.

It is the second year in a row the junior has made it to the NCAA Championship as she finished 10th in her first appearance at the event in 2013.

Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, BC) made the consolation final in the same event and finished seventh in her consolation final, 15th overall.

Coupled with her 15th place performance in the 100-yard butterfly on Thursday night, it marks a step forward for the junior who also qualified for the NCAA Championship in 2013 finishing 23rd in the 100-yard and not qualifying for the final in the 200-yard.

The Clan's 800-yard freestyle relay team finished 12th, also in a scoring position for the Clan in a time of 7:37.67.

That team was comprised of Schofield, Nam, Lauren Swistak (Port Moody, BC) and Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, BC) who swam the lead leg, coming out with the second fastest time in the field and setting a new program record for the event, formerly held by Vicky Sui who set her mark in 2008.

On Saturday, the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship will conclude.

The Clan will look for a strong finish from Cossey, who goes into the day with the highest seed time in the 100-yard freestyle, Grace Ni (Port Moody, BC) in the 200-yard backstroke and Schofield, Swistak, Nam and Cossey who will compete in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The preliminary session begins at 7:30 a.m. PST while the championship session begins at 3:00 a.m. PST.
