GENEVA, Ohio – Simon Fraser University swimmer Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, Alta.) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle competition on the final day of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, earning All-America honours for the second time this week.

Cossey's swim of 49.25 seconds was enough to topple the old NCAA record but Wayne State's Ana Azambuja swam just slightly faster to win the championship and set a new NCAA mark with a time of 48.94.

The junior swimmer, making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship, earned All-American status in the 50-yard freestyle earlier this week as well.

"I felt stronger and stronger as I moved through the race," said Cossey. "I knew I had a chance to win and really pushed for the final wall. Everyone told me I was really moving. I just needed another two metres on the race to take it."

On the final day of competition, the Clan's 400-yard medley relay team of Cossey, Carmen Nam (Hong Kong, China), Alex Schofield (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Lauren Swistak (Port Moody, B.C.) also won the consolation final, finishing ninth overall with a swim of 3:26.00 in the consolation race.

The performance pushed the five members of the Clan into the top 20 for the meet as the SFU women finished in a tie for 18th with 83 points.

"It was very nice to see Nicole Cossey really rise to this level," said Head Coach Liam Donnelly. "We managed to, on the merits of a very strong final session tonight, push into the top 20. It is a positive result but I know our team is hungry to push back into the top 10 next year."

Grace Ni (Prince George, B.C.) also swam for the Clan on the final day of the competition, competing in the 200-yard backstroke.
