ST. LOUIS, MO – Freshman Abby Lloyd won a silver medal and three other Simon Fraser University wrestlers took home bronze at the WCWA Women's College Nationals at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo, on Saturday.
 
Lloyd, a freshman from Powell River, won silver after losing in the national final of the 109-pound weight class. She won four straight matches before losing in the championship final. Clan senior Bailley Halvorson (Thunder Bay, ON), junior Darby Huckle (Sarnia, ON), and freshman Payten Smith (Maple Ridge, BC) all won their consolation final matches at the tournament to capture bronze.
 
Simon Fraser, the 2013 WCWA champion, finished fourth with 172 points in the final team standings. Defending champion King University,  ranked No. 1 all season, won its second straight team title with 269-points. It claimed four individual champions. Campbellsville University finished No. 2 with 196-points.
 
This was the 12th year that a women's college national tournament has been held, and only five teams have ever won. Oklahoma City leads with its four titles, followed by the University of the Cumberland with three and King and Missouri Valley with two each. Simon Fraser has won the team title once.
 
Lloyd, ranked No. 3 heading into the tournament, was dominating  Cody Pfau (Oklahoma City University) in the opening round of the final, leading 3-0, when she was caught in an attempted throw and pinned at 2:50 of the first round. Earlier in the day Lloyd upset No. 2 seeded Breonah Neal (King University) in a come-from-behind victory to reach the gold medal match.
 
"Abby was aggressive and dominating the final when she just got caught by a more experienced wrestler," said Clan coach Mike Jones. "She was disappointed but this is only her first year and she will learn and grow from the experience and this will make her a better wrestler in the years ahead."
 
The senior Halvorson, seeded No. 2 at 155-pounds, rebounded from her upset loss in the quarterfinals to capture the bronze with a 7-3 decision over Alexis Porter (Mckendree University) to earn All-American honours. She finished the year with a 30-3 record.
 
"Bailley was obviously disappointed after her loss but rebounded and refocused in a way that you would expect from such a decorated senior," said Jones.
 
Huckle won bronze at 101, marking her third straight All-American finish after winning by forfeit over Vanessa Smith (Wayland Baptist University) in the consolation final. She began her day losing to eventual WCWA champion Emily Webster of Oklahoma City by technical fall in the semifinal.
 
Webster went on to capture the weight class and become just the third four-time WCWA champion, joining former Simon Fraser stars Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis who both won their fourth gold medals last year. Webster was named Wrestler of the Year after finishing her career with a 118-0 record.
 
Huckle lost to Webster in last year's final, and after losing to her again in the semifinal Saturday, she rebounded to take a 3-0 decision over Tayler Resuriz (Mckendree University) to advance to the Consolation Final. Huckle completed the season 36-8.
 
Freshman Payten Smith was the surprise of the tournament, picking up a bronze medal in the consolation final of the 191-pound class, pinning Jackie Williams (King University) 1:24 into their match. Smith entered the tournament ranked 9th at 191-pounds and was coming off an ankle injury. Smith's only loss at nationals came by a touch fall 14 seconds into her quarterfinal match against Williams but Smith avenged that loss in the bronze medal match.
 
Smith had a come-back victory to upset the No. 2 seed in the consolation semifinal to give herself a shot at bronze.
 
Smith won five matches in the tournament and finished 29-6 this season.
 
Seniors Laura Anderson placed fifth at 116-pounds, Jennifer Anderson was fifth at 130, freshman Francesca Giorgio was fifth at 136 and freshman Monika Podgorski's was 6th at 170-pounds.
 
Eight Clan wrestlers earned All-American status by finishing in the top eight in their weight class.
