Indianapolis, IN - After a disappointing disqualification Wednesday afternoon, freshman Adrian VanderHelm hit the pool with energy Thursday, earning a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle to become the Clan's first All-American in men's swimming at the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championships.

After being disqualified from the 200-yard IM over to a uniform logo violation, VanderHelm set his sights on his two signature events, the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

In today's final, VanderHelm finished less than a second behind the eventual champion, Thiago Sickert of Nova South Eastern, turning in a time of 1:35.95, improving on his national ranking by one place.

The freshman will swim his final event, the 100-yard freestyle, Saturday morning in hopes of qualifying for the finals that afternoon, closing a very successful freshman campaign with the Clan.

On the women's side, the team improved seven positions on their aggregate score as the 4x100-yard medley relay team earned All-American honours with their sixth-place finish to propel the team from 18th position to 11th overall.

The foursome of Grace Ni, Meaghan Frenks, Alexandria Schofield and Nicole Cossey turned in a time of 3:45.94, edging out seventh-place Wayne State by two one-hundredths of a second.

Elsewhere at the diving tank, junior Elizabeth Durward earned a career-best 12-place in the one-metre diving event, marking over a 15-point improvement on her finish in 2014.

In the individual events, Nicole Cossey and Carmen Nam both placed 12th overall in their finals Thursday, Cossey in the 200-yard freestyle and Nam in the 400-yard IM. Both seniors will swim at least one more individual race this weekend, marking the end of their final meet with the Clan.

The women's 4x50-yard freestyle relay team of Nam, Schofield and freshmen Sidney Peake and Maran Kokoska also earned a respectable 16th-place finish, qualifying for the consolation final.

With two days remaining in the competition, the Clan women are nearing their team goal of a top-ten overall finish in the nation, currently sitting in eleventh, while on the men's side, VanderHelm's solo performances have Simon Fraser sitting in 22nd overall.

Action at the 2015 NCAA Championships continues tomorrow morning, as the Clan swimmers will begin the day in three preliminary events, before qualifying for the finals.

Swimmers in action tomorrow are Meaghan Frenks in the 100-yard breaststroke, Lauren Swistak and Carmen Nam in the 200-yard butterfly and the SFU women's 800-yard freestyle relay team.
