OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – No. 3 seed Simon Fraser University advanced seven wrestlers to the national semifinals and the Clan is tied for third after Day 1 at the 2016 WCWA Women's College Nationals at the Freede Center/Abe Lemons Arena on Friday.
Simon Fraser, the 2013 WCWA champion, is tied with Campbellsville (Kentucky) in third with 103.5 points each. No. 1 seed and two-time defending champion King University (Tennessee) is first with 136.5 points. Oklahoma City is second with 113 points.
Simon Fraser advanced seven wrestlers in 10 weight classes into semifinal matches. Senior
Darby Huckle (101), sophomore
Abby Lloyd (116), freshman
Dominique Parrish (123), freshman
Nicole Depa (130), sophomore
Francesca Giorgio (136), sophomore
Mallory Velte (143) and sophomore
Payten Smith (191) all won their quarterfinal matches and are a win away from competing for the national title.
The Clan did not compete wrestlers in two weight classes and forfeited those weights.
King University has nine wrestlers in semifinal matches in six weight classes. They have multiple semifinalists at 101, 109, and 116.
SFU's Smith (Maple Ridge), the top seed at 191-pounds, won three straight matches by fall to advance to the semifinals where she pinned Gabriela Guzman (Lindenwood University) in 2:38 minutes, her longest on Day 1 at the tournament. The other two wins ended within 40 seconds. Smith, now 33-2 on the season, will face Jackie Williams of King University in her semifinal match.
The Clan's other No. 1 seed is Velte, who opened the tournament with a pin and then captured two technical fall victories. A medical redshirt last year after finishing fourth as a freshman in 2014, Velte will take a 27-6 record into the semifinal match.
Huckle, a senior from Sarnia, ON, won three 10-0 technical fall victories. After receiving an opening round bye, Lloyd (Powell River, BC), won two matches by technical fall and then advanced to the semifinals when Cady Chessin (Menlo College) was injured midway through their quarterfinal match. Lloyd was a silver medalist a year ago and the third seed this year. She is 37-2.
Freshman
Dominique Parrish defeated teammate
Jennifer Anderson in the quarterfinals at 123. Nicole Deepa used a bye and three wins to advance to the semis at 130. Fran Giorgio won by a 7-0 decision over Jessi Kee (King University) in their 136-pound quarterfinal match.
Freshman
Kendall Reusing wrestled down at 170 and lost in the quarterfinals while freshman Aliocha Parriard lost two matches and was eliminated from the tournament.
King University won the last two WCWA women's national titles. Since the first women's college nationals was held in 2004, only two teams have won at least three national titles in a row. Oklahoma City claimed four in a row (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), while the University of the Cumberlands won three straight in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
