Clan Falls To 2-2 At Falcon Frenzy

The Simon Fraser University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday, losing 7-3 to the University of Montevallo and 9-6 to NAIA top-ranked Auburn Montgomery on Day 2 of the Falcon Frenzy Tournament.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Simon Fraser University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday, losing 7-3 to the University of Montevallo and 9-6 to NAIA top-ranked Auburn Montgomery on Day 2 of the Falcon Frenzy Tournament.

Simon Fraser is now 2-2 in the tournament and 5-6 on the season with the last game of this 12 game road trip coming on Sunday. The Clan's conference schedule begins on February 27.

Montevallo captured its second win over Simon Fraser in three games this season. Montevallo picked up one run in the first and then extended its lead to 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Simon Fraser plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to trim the Falcons' lead to 4-2.

The Falcons took a 6-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before Simon Fraser came back with one run in the top of the fifth inning. But the Clan left three runners stranded in the inning.

"We had our chances in game one, loading the bases in the top of the fifth, but we couldn't generate the runs," said Clan head coach Mike Renney.  "The reality is we are leaving too many runners stranded."

SFU's Tori Belton gave up nine hits and six runs in four innings before giving way to Jessica Tate.

Senor Stephanie Caron had two hits and two RBI to lead the Clan.

Julie Higgerson (2-3) picked up the win after allowing just one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

In the next game, AUM defeated Simon Fraser 9-6. The Warhawks led 5-2 after the second inning. A two-run fourth and a throwing error in the fifth extended the lead to an 8-2 margin. Simon Fraser responded in the sixth plating four runs to bring the game to within two.

"The second game settled into a defensive battle but we gave them too much of a lead and couldn't come back," said Renney. "We couldn't close the gap."

A solo shot in the home half of the sixth gave AUM a 9-6 lead heading to the seventh where junior Rachel Ragland came in to pick up her first save of the season.

The Warhawks picked up 10 hits as a team while Montevallo had 13 hits in the first contest against the Clan.

"We have had outstanding pitching at times and subpar pitching at times and we really need to find consistency from the staff," said Renney.
