OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Top seeded Mallory Velte won her first national title, three other Clan wrestlers captured silver medals and Simon Fraser University finished third at the 2016 WCWA Women's College Nationals at the Freede Center/Abe Lemons Arena on Saturday.
 
Velte won gold, and punched her ticket to the USA Olympic Trials, while Simon Fraser sophomore Abby Lloyd (116), freshman Nicole Depa (130) and sophomore Payten Smith (191) all advanced to national finals in their weight classes but lost, taking home silver medals.
 
Senior Darby Huckle (101), sophomore Francesca Giorgio (136) and freshman Dominique Parrish (123) won bronze medals.

The top six finishers in each weight class earned All-America honours and the Clan's Jennifer Anderson placed fifth at 123-pounds after losing to teammate Parrish in the quarterfinals.
 
Simon Fraser, the 2013 WCWA champion, finished third with 170.4 points. No. 1 seed and two-time defending champion King University (Tennessee) won its third straight national championship, finishing first with 208 points. Oklahoma City was second with 190.5 points.
 
Since the first women's college nationals was held in 2004, only two other teams have won at least three national titles in a row. Oklahoma City claimed four in a row (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), while the University of the Cumberlands won three straight in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
 
Velte, who was a medical redshirt last year after finishing fourth in 2014, was dominant in capturing her first national title, winning her opening match by a fall and then taking the next four matches by 10-0 technical fall victories to capture the 143-pound weight class.
 
A junior from Sacramento, CA, Velte won the championship over No. 8 seed Maggie Douma (Oklahoma City University) to finish the season 29-6.
 
With the victory, Velte punched her ticket to Iowa City, April 9-10, for the USA Olympic Trials. The top three USA athletes in each weight category from the 2016 WCWA Nationals earned berths at the Trials. Both Giorgio and Parrish also secured invitations.
 
Simon Fraser advanced seven wrestlers in 10 weight classes into semifinal matches.
 
For the second straight year, Lloyd took home a silver medal after she lost the 116-pound final by a 3-0 decision to Samantha Klingel (King). Klingel, the two seed, handed Lloyd, ranked three, just her third loss all season. Lloyd was runner-up at 109-pounds last year.
 
Lloyd finishes the 2015-16 season with a 38-3 record.
 
Top-ranked Smith, from Maple Ridge, was upset in the final by No. 2 seed Tiaira Scott (Campbellsville University) 10-0. Smith had pinned her opponents in each of her first four matches to reach the final.
 
The surprise of the tournament was Clan freshman Nicole Depa from Burnaby. Unranked and unheralded entering the tournament with a 10-8 record, she advanced to the national final but lost 21 seconds into her championship match on a gut wrench by Natalia Hinojo (Oklahoma City University).
 
Huckle lost in the semifinals at 101-pounds and then had to win two consolation round matches to finish third. Huckle was an All-American each of her four years at SFU. Freshman Dominique Parrish won a 10-0 technical victory over Cassidy Jasperson (Oklahoma City) to win bronze. Fran Giorgio won an 8-3 decision over Hannah Jewell (King University) to win the 136 consolation final.
